Checkers is one of the oldest board games in the world. It was played by the Egyptians more than 3,000 years ago. It was very popular with the Egyptian kings, called pharaohs. The game is basically a war game. It involves strategy with long-term planning and tactics before each move. Historians who study earlier civilizations know it was popular because these kings always wanted their most precious possessions with them in their tombs. Checker sets have been found in the tombs of several of these Egyptian god-kings. They expected to play checkers when they were dead in the afterworld. There are some differences between the ancient and modern game. Today, a checkerboard has sixty-four squares with alternating red and black colors. The ancient game usually had only fifty-two uncolored squares. Historians are uncertain whether chess or checkers came first. They are both played on the same board. Checkers is considered a much easier game. There is far less strategy involved in playing. It is more likely that checkers preceded chess. The game has other ancient roots besides Egypt. The ancient Greek poet Homer wrote The Odyssey nearly eight centuries before Christ. This long, famous poem about Odysseus describes how his wife refuses to believe her husband is dead. Suitors anxious to marry her played checkers while waiting for her to accept one of them. More than 2,000 books have been written on the strategy of checkers. The game appeals equally to children and adults. Have you ever played it? Did You Know? Download 10.24 Kb. Do'stlaringiz bilan baham: |
