Stephen Hawking was born in Oxford in 1942, exactly three hundred years
after the death of Galileo. He studied physics at Oxford University and went
on to pursue his graduate studies at Cambridge. In his early twenties he was
diagnosed as having Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, known in the UK as
Motor Neurone Disease. He held the post of Lucasian Professor of
Mathematics at Cambridge, the chair held by Isaac Newton in 1663, for
thirty years. Professor Hawking is now Director of Research for the Centre
of Theoretical Cosmology at the University of Cambridge. He has over a
dozen honorary degrees, and was awarded the Companion of Honour in
1989. He is a fellow of the Royal Society and a member of the US National
Academy of Science. His books include the bestselling A Brief History of
Time, Black Holes and Baby Universes and Other Essays, The Universe in
a Nutshell, A Briefer History of Time and, with Leonard Mlodinow, The
Grand Design. With his daughter, Lucy, he has co-authored the children’s
books George’s Secret Key to the Universe and George’s Cosmic Treasure
Hunt. Stephen Hawking is regarded as one of the most brilliant theoretical
physicists since Einstein. He lives in Cambridge.
