Abbreviations and acronyms in the English language

CONCLUSION

The issue of reductions is broad and multifaceted. The complexity of studying abbreviations is exacerbated by the fact that abbreviated lexical units are extremely diverse, and also by the fact that some abbreviations are closely related to symbols, conventions, shorthand, mnemonics, etc.

In general, the process of formation of abbreviations (abbreviation) can be defined as the replacement of any stable language expression (word, phrase) in oral or written speech with a shorter expression based on the material of the first expression and with the preservation of the general semantic content. The essence of the abbreviation process is to rationalize the use of the material elements of the language for communicative purposes, that is, its sound and graphic shell.
With this approach, abbreviation covers a wide range of linguistic phenomena, including ellipses, “telescopic” words ( blends ), etc., which are not always referred to as abbreviations, although in reality they perform the same function as “traditional” abbreviations (abbreviations, acronyms). , truncation), - reduction of formal language material (sound or graphic) to convey a certain semantic content.
