ABOUT URGENCH Contemporary Urgench lies on the territory of Uzbekistan, bordering on Turkmenistan lands. Urgench is one of the most well-groomed and civilized cities in Uzbekistan, so Khorezm is not only the dead land and ancient ruins shown in the past parts (Toprak-Kala and Ayaz-Kala). In the XVI centurybecause of the change in the Amudarya riverbed and subsequent drought, the residents were forced to leave their original place and establish a new city - the present Urgench. Thus, both cities were separated not only by time, but also by the state border. Urgench was founded relatively recently. At the beginning of the XVII century, when the Khorezm Khan moved to Khiva, and the districts of Old Urgench with its mausoleums and minarets dwindled finally, people moved closer to the new capital, and took with them a native name. Thus New Urgench appeared. In the middle of the square there is al-Khorezmi Avenue, along a wide straight line leading to the airport on the other side of the city through the Independence Square with a white turret of local chimes. The avenue goes outto the memorial to Jalaladdin Menguberdi of impressive size. It was in this place where many years ago the well-known Great Silk Road, along which the merchants moved, ran along. Nobody knows the exact date of the founding of the settlement. It was quite large trade and industrial city with developed irrigation system. In the 10-11th centuries it was the capital of Khorezm, but in the 13th century the city was destroyed by army of Genghis Khan and century later it was ruined to the ground by Amir Temur. The city had being struggled for its existence untill the 17th century, but then it was left with all its mosques, minarets, fortresses and irrigation systems. Today ruins of ancient Urgench attract a lot of tourists from all over the world. Modern Urgench is located on the territory of Uzbekistan close to the Uzbek-Turkmen border. So both cities are divided not only by time but also by state border. This city was founded in the beginning of 20th century. There is almost no any historical sightseeing in the city. Being the administrative center of Khorezm region of Uzbekistan, Urgench plays role of transport nodal point in the region. There are railways running through the city and connecting south and north of Central Asia. Within the city there is the international airport “Urgench”, which is capable to receive aircrafts of any type and serves flights from Tashkent, Moscow, Saint-Petersburg and other cities of the world. Also Urgench is connected with Khiva by unique trolleybus line with 35 km of length. By the way, all major sites and monuments of Khorezm region are located in Khiva. So Urgench is the perfect place for start point to tours to Khiva and Kunya-Urgench. Khorezm, boasting very interesting and rich history, is one of the oldest Central Asian regions. The kingdom of Khorezm shahs was one of the world’s largest in the 11th - 12th centuries. The region is part of Uzbekistan today, and the city of Urgench is its administrative center. Today’s Urgench is a small city with a population of about 140,000. It is located near the border with Turkmenistan. In the 17th century the residents of Kunya Urgench (located in Turkmenistan now), which, known as Gurganj, was the capital of the kingdom of Khorezm shahs, had to leave it because of deteriorating weather conditions: the Amudarya had changed its course then, and it became too dry and hot there. They moved to a better place and founded Urgench. Khiva - Uzbekistan treasure trove of architectural monuments - is another famous neighboring city of Urgench. The location near this famous outdoor museum had a direct influence on Urgench: it was made an important transport hub of the area, with roads and routes running from it in many directions. It takes only 30 minutes to get from Urgench to Khiva by car; or you can use the unique 35-kilometer-long intercity trolleybus line built in 1997.
