ACAD. IONEL HAIDUC – A LIFE DEDICATED TO SCIENCE The Roumanian scientific community is honoured to celebrate the 80 th anniversary of Professor Ionel Haiduc, former President of the Roumanian Academy. Born in Cluj on May 9 th , 1937, Ionel Haiduc distinguished himself as a very good scholar of the National College “Emil Racoviță” and as a talented student of the Faculty of Chemistry of the Babeş-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca. His bachelor thesis, successfully defended in 1959, was published shortly after the graduation as his first book (1960). In 1964, he obtained the equivalent title of a PhD in chemistry at the “M. V. Lomonosov” Institute of Fine Chemical Technology in Moscow under the guidance of the Academician Kuzma Andrianovich Andrianov. The academic development of Professor Ionel Haiduc is strongly linked to the Faculty of Chemistry of the Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca. Starting with 1959 and until his retirement he was always one of the brilliant member of the teaching staff of this remarkable institution which was, upon the time, promoting the modern chemistry in Romania. He completed his formation as a researcher in USA, where he spent postdoctoral research stays in organometallic chemistry with Professor Henry Gilman, at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa (1966-1968) and with Professor Robert Bruce King at University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia (1971-1972). After returning from USA, at the age of only 36, he became full professor of inorganic and organometallic chemistry at the Faculty of Chemistry of the Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca. The full recognition at national level of his exceptional scientific contributions was marked by his election as corresponding member in 1990 and soon after, in 1991, as full member of the Roumanian Academy. Sixty years of his life were dedicated with constant passion and devotion to a science which was denoted by himself as a great love at a first glance. With enthusiasm, deep study and a continuous interest for acquiring advanced knowledge and new skills, he transformed step by step a hobby in a successful profession. He is not only a remarkable scientist, but also a professor and mentor sharing knowledge, skills and own experience with his co-workers and students. After he returned from USA, he introduced the Organometallic Chemistry as a new discipline at the Faculty of Chemistry in Cluj and he established his own research group in this field. The scientific interest of Professor Ionel Haiduc was focused on several areas: coordination and organometallic chemistry of main group elements, supramolecular organometallic chemistry, inorganic ring systems, biologically active metal compounds (including antitumor activity), nomenclature and systematization in inorganic chemistry. Recently his attention is paid to the new concept of inverse coordination. In all these areas Professor Ionel Haiduc had a pioneering work in Roumania. The valuable contribution of Academician Ionel Haiduc to the international scientific community in the field of inorganic and organometallic chemistry can be summarized in his publications: 9 books (published in Romanian, Polish, English and Greek), 35 chapters in collective volumes and more than 350 original and review articles. Introducere în chimia ciclurilor anorganice (Introduction to the chemistry of
book, Chimia compuşilor metalorganici (The Chemistry of Metalorganic Compounds, Editura Stiintifica, București, 1974) served as a unique source of information for many years for the Romanian students. Moreover, it represents the beginning of Organometallic Chemistry in Romania, thought in a systematic way. The next books, Basic Organometallic Chemistry (co-author – Jerry Zuckerman, Walter de Gruyter, Berlin, 1985), The Chemistry of Inorganic Homo- and Heterocycles (co-author – Bryan D. Sowerby, Academic Press, London, 1987; 2 vols.), Organometallics in Cancer Chemotherapy (co-author – Cristian Silvestru, CRC Press, Boca Raton, Florida, USA, 1989 – vol. I; 1990 – vol. II) are completing the image of the research area of Professor Ionel Haiduc. The book Supramolecular Organometallic Chemistry” (co-

Over the years he was equally burdened and honoured with several administrative positions: Vice- Rector (1976-1984) and Rector (1990-1993) of the Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, Vice-President of the National Conference of Rectors, Vice-President (1998-2000) and President (2006-2014) of the Roumanian Academy, Honorary member of Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Gottingen (2009), Hungarian Academie of Sciences (2007), Leibnitz Societat der Wissenschaften, Berlin (2009), American Chemical Society (2016). He contributed with enthusiasm and ability to the European integration of the Romanian teaching and research systems and he suggested strategies and solutions for increasing the scientific visibility of the Roumanian science in the world. As a member of different academic bodies, he was involved in science policy and management, always interested in a continuously improved quality of all academic activities. His brilliant career received a fully deserved recognition. The Roumanian Academy awarded him with the “Gh. Spacu” prize already in 1974. Many other national and international awards and prizes marked the exceptional carrier of Professor Ionel Haiduc. Only a few of them are mentioned here: Humboldt fellow at Magdeburg Universität (1997), Gauss Professorship by the Göttingen Academy of Science (1998-1999), “Pro Colaboratione” award of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Honour Diploma awarded by the Presidium of the Moldavian Academy of Sciences (1999), Honorary Member of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova (2002), elected member of Academia Europaea (London) (2002) and corresponding member of the Montenegrin Academy of Sciences (2008), the Gold Medal “Dimitrie Cantemir” of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova (2007), the Prize for his whole activity awarded by the Romanian Chemical Society (2004), the “Costin Nenitzescu-Walter Criegee Vorlesungen” prize of Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (2005), Doctor
Timişoara, Roumania (2004) and The West University of Timişoara, Roumania (2016). He also was awarded by the Presidents of Roumania with the “Star of Romania” (Steaua României, in 2000 and 2006), by the President of the Republic Moldova with the “Order of Honour” (2006), and with the “Pushkin Medal” by the President of the Russian Federation (2007). The scientific competence and his valuable contributions lead not only to the personal prestige in the international scientific community, but also to the international recognition of the Roumanian science in the world. As visiting or invited professor to different universities in United States, Mexico, Spain, Germany, Brazil, Singapore, etc., he was the ambassador of the Romanian science and culture in the world. The exceptional value of Professor Ionel Haiduc was internationally recognized also by electing him as member of the editorial board of several international journals: Synthesis and Reactivity in Inorganic and Metal-
International Council of Main Group Chemists and the Alliance of the Universities for Democracy). Besides his scientific achievements, his sense of humour and kindness, his diplomacy and tenacity, his friendship offered with generosity to all those which had the privilege to be in his close proximity, he still is a perfect ambassador of the Roumanian science and culture. With the occasion of the 80th anniversary, the Editorial Board of Revue Roumaine de Chimie along with the whole community of Roumanian chemists are honoured to bring their best wishes for a long healthy and fruitful life to Professor Ionel Haiduc, the person who was dedicated to science along his whole life.
