Practice A – Controlling carbon emissions
Problem
: There is general agreement that rising levels of carbon dioxide (CO
2
) in the earth’s
atmosphere, caused by burning fossil fuels, are contributing to global warming.
Solution A
: It is argued that this trend can be reversed by generating energy from renewable sources,
such as wind power or solar.
Argument against Solution A
: However, these sources tend to be unreliable and are often more
expensive than using oil or coal.
Solution B
: An alternative approach is to increase energy efficiency, for
example by insulating homes
better, so that demand for energy is reduced.
