6.9.13 Genre Descriptor 
The Genre Descriptor provides genre, program type or category information for events. This 
descriptor may appear in the 
descriptor()
loop for the given EIT event. The Genre Descriptor 
references entries in the Categorical Genre Code Assignments Table (Table 6.20), and may include 
references to expansions to that table provided by the DCC Selection Code Table (Section 6.8). 
The Categorical Genre Code Assignments Table specifies two types of program attributes, a 
“basic” set and a “detail” set. The basic set characterizes the program at the highest level and 
defines the general category of the program. Each Genre Descriptor should include at least one 
attribute from the basic set. 
The bit stream syntax for the Genre Descriptor shall be as shown in Table 6.38.
