I R E C T I O N S
Have your child record events on separate pieces of loose-leaf paper and
keep them in a notebook. Give the notebook a title, such as “Kyle’s
Happening Book,” and give each page a date and title.
There are a variety of simple methods your child can use to record an
event. Let your child decide what works for him. For example, suppose
your child wants to record a trip to the park. Here are some possibilities:
⽧ He could draw something that happened in the park, such as Mommy
and he walking hand in hand under the trees. This can be as simple as
drawing stick figures or as elaborate as snipping pieces of hair and glu-
ing them on the people in the drawing.
⽧ He could glue things he found at the park, such as a flower or leaf, on
the paper.
⽧ He could glue something you purchased in the park, such as a popped
balloon or candy wrapper, on the paper.
⽧ He could cut out pictures from a brochure or magazine that has a simi-
lar feeling or look of that day and glue the pictures on the paper.
⽧ He (or you, using his descriptions) could write a short story about what
happened in the park. Include his emotional experience by writing
down how he felt about the experience or by drawing little faces (happy,
sad, mad, and so on).

A R I A T I O N S
⽧ Instead of chronicling an event that happened, make a page about
anticipated future events. For example, your child could depict the
kinds of things he wants to do when he goes to visit Grandma.
⽧ Instead of a Happening Book, make a Nature Book and paste in or out-
line things found outside, such as leaves and seeds.
