With your older child, use a tape recorder to record common sounds around
the house, both inside and out. Leave a pause
between sounds so that your
younger child knows when one has stopped and the other has started.
Here are some examples of sounds to record:
Phone ringing
Toilet flushing
Water running
Dog
barking
Doorbell ringing
Car passing by
Flatware jingling
Newspaper rustling
Television
turning on
Radio playing
Microwave beeping
Toaster going off
Door
being knocked on
Horn honking
Piano playing
Birds chirping
Rain falling
Car
starting
Washing machine or dryer running
Blender whirring
Kettle whistling
Wind
chimes chiming
Once you and your older child have made the tape, one of you can play
it for the younger sibling and see if she can guess what is making that
sound.

Make the sounds yourself for your child to guess. You
can imitate the sound
of a horn honking, a car starting, a doorbell ringing, a dog barking, and a
teapot whistling. Making the sound of a newspaper rustling, a piano play-
ing, and some of the others may be too challenging!

play this game spontaneously, such as when walking or driving.
