Billet Wood is a traditional chestnut and birch coppice woodland, with wide tracks on all sides of the wood. A few oaks are to be found mainly

on the outer edges of the wood, and carpets of bluebells. The chestnut coppice was last cut here about 15 years ago. So it is ready for

coppicing, but not over-ready, and you could choose your time. It is a very durable timber, being naturally resistant to rot, and makes an

excellent natural choice for cleft fencing, posts, roofing shingles and outdoor structures. Chestnut can also be burnt in your closed wood-

burning stove. Either way, when you have cut an area of coppice, you will be amazed to see the range of wild flowers appearing the following

year.

The ground is on a gentle slope, and being well drained, it is generally dry throughout the wood, making it is quite easy to walk amongst the

trees. If you are looking for a wood to come to and relax to get away from a hectic life, then this is one of the quietest and more remote woods

we have in the south-east. We have created a small clearing and put in a chestnut seat for the visitor to discover just how peaceful it is here.

. This land has been wooded for centuries, so in the seed bed there are probably many wild flowers and mosses from former times which

will often pop up if any direct sunlight reaches them.

Just inside the locked entrance gate, near the road, there is a generous timber store and parking area, shared with other owners, with a good

stoned track, leading to the start of Billet wood. The owner of Billet Wood will have vehicle rights of way along the track on the map marked in

green.

Nearby is the village of 

Sissinghurst

 and 

Sissinghurst Castle Gardens

, both well worth a visit.

Directions

• From the A21 take the A262 east, going through Goudhurst.

• At the roundabout junction of the A262, and the A 229, continue on the A262 and go through Sissinghurst.

• About 1 mile from Sissinghurst you will reach a ‘Woodlands for Sale’ sign on a track entrance to your right.

• Go down this track, which is also a public footpath, slowly.

• Park near the wooden gate entrance to the wood. (There are several young cats about so please take care.)

• Please do not block the gate or park directly in front of a caravan there. The occupant of the caravan has lived in that spot for over

50 years. She keeps a lot of pets, including a flock of domestic cats. We are happy to be able to let her use the site, but she is in no way

connected to Woodlands.co.uk.

• Go around the gate, and take the track that forks left (keeping an old shed on your right hand side)

• Walk for about 300 meters along a stoned track to a bridge across a stream.

• Walk across the bridge (take care as this can be a fast running stream at times)

• After a further 250 meters you will reach Billet Wood at the fork in the track.
