Social media and privacy rights

The development of the computer аnd the internet that followed it during the past century hаve been аmong the most significant developments in communicаtion. In terms of informаtion processing аnd trаnsmission methods, these two entities hаve significantly chаnged the globe.Social mediа is one of the fields thаt hаs experienced substаntial growth аs а result of computer аnd internet аdvancements. Аs more individuаls hаve аccess to computers, mobile devices, and the internet, social networking has drawn millions of users worldwide, and those numbers are only expected to increase (Frau-Meigs, 2011). Social networking websites have made it possible for people to contact with friends, family, and coworkers anywhere in the world (Flynn, 2012).Social media users should be extremely concerned about their privacy and security despite these advantages. The purpose of this essay is to examine the security and privacy concerns to which users are subjected. Social media will be defined and examples of social media will be shown in order to accomplish this goal. The problem section that follows will concentrate on privacy and security issues related to social media-specific cybercrimes such identity theft, espionage, and fraud. The benefits and drawbacks of social media will be examined, and suggestions for addressing the security and privacy concerns will be made.

Online and mobile communication tools used by people to have interactive conversations are referred to as social media (Bradshaw & Keefer, 2007). Social networks like Facebook and Myspace, blogging platforms like WordPress and Typepad, wikis like Wikipedia and Wikia, and business/technical networks are just a few examples of web-based technology (Linkedln among others).Despite the fact that social media has made it possible for people to stay in touch despite obstacles like distance, time, and money, privacy and security concerns pose a threat to the efficiency of these platforms. In this context, privacy refers to keeping personal information private, sensitive, and unavailable to the general public (Timm & Duven, 2008, p.90)As a result, social media can be seen as a useful tool for advancing and encouraging globalization (Bradshaw & Keefer, 2007). This is explained by the fact that social media technologies enable worldwide contact and interactions, fostering international relations in the process.Cha (2011) categorizes security and privacy risks resulting from social media use into behavioral and technical challenges. The invasion of privacy caused by social media is one of its issues. This has been explained by the development of technology, which has made privacy violation not only possible but also practicable.

For instance, social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, among others, have made it possible for outsiders to quickly access personal information, making privacy violation simple (Miller & Wells, 2007). Castro (2010, p. 2) elaborates on this by stating that there have been instances where internet firms have gathered personal information from these websites and used it in ways that blatantly violate users' privacy.According to the author, personal information is occasionally acquired and given to other parties without the user's knowledge or consent (Castro, 2010, p.2). A violation of one's right to privacy would be the dissemination of personal information under such conditions.Similar to this, using social media cannot be guaranteed to be anonymous. In order to protect their real identities on social networking sites, people used pseudonyms in the past (Chen et al, 2008). Unfortunately, the majority of websites today use a coercive tactic to force users to register with their true names and information (Chen et al, 2008).According to Cha (2011), technological limitations and registration criteria encourage people to expose their real identities and personal information prior to joining an online community. Also, whenever someone utilizes the services offered by social networking sites like Facebook, their IP addresses are shared without their permission (Cha, 2011).One of the key benefits of social media is that it provides a forum for individuals to freely exchange ideas, knowledge, and opinions (Hong et al, 2005). This poses a major threat to both national security and individual privacy. This is explained by the fact that the vast majority of information is posted in public areas where it can be seen by a large number of people. As a result, such knowledge may cause adverse reactions from people, leading to a panic attack. For instance, some messages and comments advocate for extremism. Such information may inspire terrorism if it leads people to believe there are injustices occurring and that they should take action. However, if utilized inappropriately, social media posts like images and comments could cause shame in the future and endanger many people's employment (Spon, 2010; Albrechtslund, 2008).Via social media, spying has become simpler thanks to technological advancements. While creating a profile, people provide information about their lives and preferences. Because of this, stalkers may collect such data and use it in ways that violate others' privacy (Albrechtslund, 2008). Social media thus encourages social vices like snooping and stalking. The fact that these websites make the globe a riskier place for kids has only made this situation worse.Children who could be used by crooks online now face more hazards thanks to social media platforms. According to Barnes (2006), young children have been lured into contacting strangers on chat rooms and mobile phones who later subject them to various sorts of abuse. According to the author, a sizable percentage of children have reported being assaulted by someone they met online. This demonstrates the security risk that both kids and adults face when using social media.According to Albrechtslund (2008), a number of countries have exhibited interest in social media since it enables them to characterize possible criminals. Governments are able to gather details on a person through these routes, including their residence, place of employment, political and religious affiliations, and social circles. This data allow various government agencies to keep a close eye on citizens and enhance their monitoring capabilities. However, if such information ends up in the hands of repressive regimes, it poses a severe security and privacy threat to civilians. Individuals can suffer as a result of governmental organizations monitoring and meddling in every area of their lives by listening to their phone calls, emails, and internet history (Bennett, 2011).

This essay set out to investigate social media's privacy and security concerns. The debates presented here show that social media users voluntarily disclose personal information, which can be utilized by bad actors and corporations to violate people's security and privacy in the real world. Also, it's been seen that people post private information on social media out of a misplaced sense of security.Governments, criminals, and even employers may use this information to profile, blackmail, or spy on individuals. People should use caution and filter the information they share on social media because it becomes public as soon as it is submitted, despite laws and procedures that aim to safeguard users' information from such vices. Users are in a better position to avoid the drawbacks of publishing personal information to social media by doing this.
