Borrowed words

Loandwords are words adopted by the speakers of one language from a different language (the source language). A loanword can also be called a borrowing. Borrowing is a consequence of cultural contact between two language communities.

Here are three common borrowings: They/their- this common pronoun comes from the Old Norse word “PEIR”. Person-this comes from the Latin “PERSONA”. Very- this despised yet commonly used adjective comes from the Old French “VERAL”, which means “true

Loanwords make up 80% of English. As lexicographer Kory Stamper explains, “English has been borrowing words from other language since its infancy”. As many as 350 other languages are represented and their linguistic contributions actually make up about 80% of English!

The popular borrowing words: While many countries have not officially adopted the word in their language, it is said and written just the same. In Spanish, OKAY is pronounced just the same but may be spelled okey or simply OK. In French, Dutch, and Hungarian, it may be spelled OK or Oke.

PIZZA , of course , is borrowed from Italian, but the deeper ingredients of the word, if you will, are unclear… Others look to the Langobardic (an ancient German language in northern Italy) bizzo, meaning “BITE”.
