Th e date, Friday, February 12, 1988. It was exactly eight days before my Bar Mitzvah. Surprisingly my father picked me up from Yeshiva and told me we were in for a special treat. As we entered Boro Park I still had no clue whom or where I was going to see or meet. My father managed to fi nd a parking spot on 15th Avenue between 46th and 47th streets. We walked to the corner of 48th street and 15th Avenue to an attractive looking home that some- how appeared out of place in Boro Park. To my surprise, outside this home waited my 90-year-old great uncle Harry Boren and his wife, my great aunt Eleanor. My uncle greeted me and told me again that this would be a day I would never forget for the rest of my life. He was certainly cor- rect! I was at the home of the Grand Rabbi, Rabbi Shlomo Halberstam zt”l, Th e Bobover Rebbe. My family is not Bobov, howev- er, growing up I always knew that my family had some sort of connection to the Bobover family. I knew that my family was with Rabbi Halberstam zt”l in Poland. But that was all I had known. As we were greeted by the Gab- bai of the Rebbe, Reb Shmuel Horow- itz, I immediately felt as though we were royalty. Th e Gabbai took us up the steps where the Rebbetzin greet- ed us. We followed the Rebbetzin to the dining room, where she gave us something to drink and warmly con- versed with all of us. About fi ve minutes into the conversation, the Rebbe appeared. Th e very air around us seemed to clear a path for the Rebbe. Could this room alone contain all the great- ness that stood before me? I knew that I was in the presence of one of the leading fi gures of Torah Jewry. Physi- cally, he was a tall man in stature, with a silver beard and horn-rimmed glasses. He wore a magnifi cent navy blue, patterned robe. He kissed my uncle, and treated him as though he was the Rebbe, the “nobleman”. His actions and his mannerisms made an impression on me that I shall never forget. My uncle proceeded to intro- duce my father and me to the Rebbe. In a mixture of broken English, He- brew and Yiddish, the Rebbe spoke to us for close to two hours. To any Bobover Chasid, this would seem im- possible, however, the Rebbe spoke to my uncle like he was his best friend. He talked about the old times with my uncle, showed us pictures of his family in Eretz Yisrael and tested me on the Perek of Gemara I was learn- ing in Yeshiva. My great uncle Harry Boren and the Bobover Rebbe discussed the relationship between my great great Grandfather Aryeh Leib Borenstien, (my namesake and Uncle Harry’s fa- ther) and the Rebbe’s father, Rabbi Ben Zion Halberstam zt”l. As times grew worse for the Jewish people in Galicia, Poland in the early 1900’s, the elder Bobover Rebbe recognized the dangers that lurked. However, for fear of intermarriage and the lures of the “brave new world,” Rabbi Ben- Zion Halberstam, was hesitant to al- low immigration to the United States. However, he felt that the Borensteins were a family that would not suc- cumb to outside temptations. Aryeh Leib and his family settled in America and the situation worsened in Poland. As World War II approached, Aryeh Leib recognized that the Bobover dy- nasty was in danger of becoming lost in the ashes of the Holocaust. He and a small group of dedicated followers made every attempt, and succeeded, to bring Rabbi Ben-Tzion Halbers- tam, zt”l, and his family to America in the 1940’s. An hour passed like seconds, and the Rebbe took out a Sefer Torah that was written by a sofer of the Baal Shem Tov, the founder of Chasidus. He told me that he was a direct ninth descendant of the Baal Shem Tov and that this Sefer Torah had been hand- ed down from one generation to the next in his family. Th e Rebbe allowed my father and me to hold and kiss the Torah. Years later, I went to the Rebbe for Simchas Torah and learned that he would only dance with this Torah on this day. I was among the privileged few who had the “zechus” to hold this precious Sefer Torah. Th e Rebbe ended our conver- sation when it was time for him to daven Mincha. Before he left , he pre- sented me with a bar mitzvah gift of a silver kiddush cup and his grandfa- ther’s work, Divrei Chaim. Th e bond between our families was apparent to me, and the bracha he gave me to continue in the footsteps of my family only strengthened our bond. Monday, July 8th, Rosh Chodesh Menachem Av marks the 13th Yahrtzeit of the Rebbe. May his p’tirah be a kaparah for Klal Israel. Remembering the Bobover Rebbe Rabbi Shlomo Halberstam zt”l (1908-2000) on his 13 th Yahrtzeit by Ari Hirsch Th is Monday July 8th, Rosh Chodesh Menachem Av is the 13th yahrtzeit of the Bobover Rebbe, Rav Shlomo Halberstam (1908-2000), son of Rav Benzion, grandson of Rav Shlomo, founder of the Bobov dynasty. At the outbreak of World War II, he and his father escaped to Lemberg. On the fourth of Av 1942 his father was killed, and Rav Shlomo escaped to the Bochnia Ghetto. In Bochnia, the Rov lost his Rebbetzin and two children. Rav Shlomo managed to escape with his only surviving child, Naft ali, to Budapest, and then to Bucharest. Rav Shlomo is believed to have been the last remaining Chassidic rebbe to have survived the Holocaust. Born in the Galicia region of central Europe, Rav Shlomo arrived in the United States in 1946, alone and indigent aft er his group was largely obliterated by the Nazis. During the war, Rav Shlomo dressed up as a nun in order to rescue other Jews, hiding them in the false bottom of a coal truck. He strove to create a Bobov that would match the Bobov that had been destroyed, working assiduously to build chassidim that his father would have been proud of. Rav Shlomo is widely credited with rebuilding the Bobover community in the United States. Cat- skills Hatzalah, a division of Chevra Hatzalah, was fi rst established in 1983 to meet the growing needs of the sum- mer residents in the Catskills. In 2003, Catskills Hatzalah expanded it’s opera- tions to provide service year-round in Sullivan County. AH: How does Hatzalah work upstate with members coming from all different parts of the tri-state area? YF & BG: Dur- ing the summer months, all the Hatzalah mem- bers that come upstate have the same privileges in the Catskills area that they would have in the city. Th e Catskills division is the seventeenth “neighbor- hood” of Central Hatzalah of New York City. While the Catskills have a year-round operation, the vast ma- jority of their activity is in July and August, when summer residents ar- rive. A plurality (possibly majority) of these residents live in areas covered by NYC Hatzalah ten months of the year. A similar proportion of the Hatzalah EMTs are New York City members, carrying New York City radios, so it is logical for dispatch to use this fre- quency. However, there are dedicated Catskills dispatchers, who are familiar with the camp, bungalow colony, and hotel locations in the Catskills. Th e Catskills dispatchers use C-BASE as a radio call sign, while other NYC dis- patchers use H-BASE as a radio call sign. AH: How many Hatzalah members are upstate over the summer? YF & BG: During the week, approxi- mately 125-150. On weekends, ap- proximately 350. AH: To which hospital does Hatzalah typically take someone? YF & BG: Harris, which is now called Catskill Regional, or Ellenville Hospi- tal, depending on which is closer. Last summer Orange Regional Medical Center opened its doors in Middletown. Th e new hos- pital has some specialties the region did not have previ- ously. AH: If one has an emergency, how should one prepare for Hatzalah, espe- cially at night and on Shabbos.? YF & BG: Call 718-387-1750 -or- 718- 230-1000. Both numbers work with both 718 or 212. If you don’t have money, you can call collect or call the 800 number, which is good all year round: 1-800-387-1750. You should have the exact address, the exact town and cross section because a lot of the towns have the same street names. Stand at the road with a fl ashlight on to guide Hatzalah, even on Friday night. Th e calmer you stay and the more guidance you give Hatzalah, the better off the patient will be. Catskills Hatzalah responds to over 2,000 calls per year, has a fl eet of 13 am- bulances and over 350 volunteers. AH: How many calls does Hatzalah typically receive over the sum- mer? YF & BG: Over 2,000. Th e calls vary. Th e most prevalent calls are about children falling off their bikes, injuries from playing, or allergic reactions to bee bites or insect bites. We get calls about cuts and bruises, heart attacks, and women who have high risk pregnancies. We ask people not to come upstate if they are very sick or if they have high risk pregnancies. Although the hospitals cooperate with us 100%, they may not have the facilities and the capabilities of treating someone with these kinds of ailments. We then need to transport these patients with paramedics which may not be safe, and with all the construction on Route 17, we need to tie up our fl eet, tie up our volunteers for many, many hours and it puts a tremen- dous hardship on Hatzalah. AH: How often do you use the heli- copter at Catskill Regional Center? YF & BG: Last year we used the helicopter for 13 patients. We have access to the helicopter 24/7. In the event of a major trauma, or special cases that meet the criteria, we can take a patient to Westchester Hospital, and in certain cases we will bring patients to the city. We Do Not want to abuse the helicopter; it’s not a taxi service. It’s used for acute emer- gencies, and if chas v’shalom there’s a major trauma we wouldn’t take the pa- tient to Harris Hospital but straight to the trauma center. AH: On behalf of everyone upstate I would like to wish a tremendous yasher koach to all the members of Hatzalah and hope that we should all have a healthy summer and not need the ser- vices of Hatzalah. by Ari Hirsch cont. from pg.72 SHABBOS HATZOLAH THIS SUMMER IS JULY 6TH PARSHAS MATOS/MASSEI THE HEIMISHE VOICE OF THE CA TSKILLS SUMMER COMMUNITY Catskills Hatzalah Headquarters on Brickman Road in South Fallsburg THECOUNTRYVUES.com The Nine Days & Visiting Day #1 Edition, 2013 74 DOOR TO DOOR 175 Bungalow Colonies What are you waiting for? 718-377-8016 ADVERTISE IN Serving All of Your Soccer Needs 845-747-9482 187 MILL STREET LIBERTY, NY 12754 8 L Tuesday - Saturday: 11am - 6pm Sunday: 12pm - 5pm CLOSED MONDAYS WE LOVE CAMPS!
