About the Authors
Andrew Crockett was General Manager of the Bank for International
Settlements form January 1994 to March 2003, and Chairman of the Financial
Stability Forum from April 1999 until March 2003. Prior to joining the BIS, he
held positions at the IMF (1972-89) and at the Bank of England (1989-93). He
has published widely on issues related to international finance.
Trevor Harris is Managing Director and Head of the Global Valuation and
Accounting Team in Equity Research at Morgan Stanley. He is also co-Director
of the Center for Excellence in Accounting and Security Analysis (CEASA) at
Columbia Business School where he was on the faculty from 1983-2002. He was
the Jerome A Chazen Professor of International Business and Chair of the
Accounting Department before joining Morgan Stanley in June 2000. He also
serves as a member of the User Advisory Council of the FASB, the Standards
Advisory Council to the International Accounting Standards Board, and the
International Capital Markets Advisory Committee at the New York Stock
Exchange. He has published widely in academic journals and in books on 
valuation and accounting issues. 
Frederic S Mishkin is the Alfred Lerner Professor of Banking and Financial
Institutions at the Graduate School of Business, Columbia University and a
Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. From 1994 to
1997 he was Executive Vice President and Director of Research at the Federal
Reserve Bank of New York and an associate economist of the Federal Open
Market Committee of the Federal Reserve System. His research focuses on mon-
etary policy and the impact of financial markets on the aggregate economy, and
he is the author of over 100 professional articles and ten books, including The
Economics of Money, Banking and Financial Markets, the leading textbook in
its field. 
Eugene N White is Professor of Economics at Rutgers University and a Research
Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research. His research focuses on
asset bubbles, financial architecture, banking crises and deposit insurance. He is
author of many articles and books on these topics, and most recently he edited
(with M Bordo and C Goldin), The Defining Moment: The Great Depression and the
American Economy in the Twentieth Century.
