1.6 Research Method
In analyzing and collecting the data, this research used qualitative descriptive method. According to Setiawan (2010: 2), qualitative method is a method to present the text in order to bring out the real meaning with close reading, not only from a plain view. Such as close reading on the novel I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings will provide deepen meaning of the text and emerge woman character which have right injustice and raises the oppression related to the topic. According to Nawawi (1995: 63), descriptive method is a procedure of problem solving by describing the subject or the object of the research based on the visible facts, by means of a method which is not justify falseness. Based on theories above, the data found will be analyzed in detail to obtain sexual oppression contained in the data. The data were taken from “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings” novel by Maya Angelou (1969). Sexual Politics (1970) by Kate Millett was used to analyze the conflict in the novels 1.6.1 Data Collection All of the data have been taken from “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings” novel by Maya Angelou. The data were collected by making classification based on five conceptualizations of sexual politics: Ideological, Biological, Sociological, Economic, and Anthropological. Data Analysis “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings” novel is a childhood story of Maya Angelou. Maya is s black woman in Stamps, Arkansas, which shipped by her father to her grandma. Maya lived in her grandma store surroundings white people. She (Maya) should be conformed herself with their society, in fact Maya was black and mostly people in this society is white. Maya had the oppressions from white people in Stamps, Arkansas. However her grandma always preached her to accept what she gave from white people because her grandma had strong belief and belongs to the church. Someday Maya and her little brother Bailey took by her mother Vivian to St. Louis, and meet Vivian’s boyfriend Mr. Freeman. They also live in Vivian’s house together like the family. Even though, Mr. Freeman was considered as their biological father, Mr. Freeman even raped Maya and then threatened her. If she told anyone about that, Bailey, her brother, will be killed. So she did not speak to anyone, because she wanted to protect Bailey. The collected data from I Know Why The caged Bird Sings will be analyzed by using the outlined Sexual Politics theory in the previous chapter, which is divided them into five aspects: ideological, sociological, biological, economical, and anthropological. The data will be described in detail and will be combined with Sexual Politics theory by Kate Millett to obtain the triggers of Sexual Oppression experienced by Maya in the novel. Download 80.2 Kb.
