Chat and Inclusivity - What's the link ? - At an inclusivity event last week I found myself onstage hosting a short Q&A with some really courageous and inspiring colleagues. These people opened their history and hearts to a large crowd in an effort to break down perceptions, barriers and to increase the relatability of themselves and their challenges.
- Whilst preparing to MC them in sharing their life and career challenges, I'd reflected on my own route "up through the ranks" and how fortunate I'd been to have had a number of my earlier leaders take time-out to advise, mentor, coach or just listen to me when I was uncertain, unconfident or just indecisive.
Looking back at the impact these individuals, many of which are now friends, had on me and my career I now realise how fortunate I was and so ...I started my short opening speech with "I'm Luke...and I'm lucky". - Looking back at the impact these individuals, many of which are now friends, had on me and my career I now realise how fortunate I was and so ...I started my short opening speech with "I'm Luke...and I'm lucky".
- When I became a senior leader, a decade or so ago, I'll admit to maybe taking on the mentor role as maybe part of the established leaders "uniform". That is, it was both expected by the business and I felt disposed to do the traditional thing of "putting something back in".
- With the advance of the years, with their expected variety of life and career highs & lows, I now reflect that this "obligation" based perspective was narrow in the extreme. In fact, I'd go so far as to say I now see the chance to spend time with earlier-career colleagues as an essential part of my own development.
Most of the conversations I now have originate from a call or email follow-up to a chance meeting at a conference, event or just comment on a forum. We generally start with a quick intro and some context as to why the conversation was requested. That tends to "flush-out" whether the conversation is just networking or whether there is something tangible the colleague wants to work on. - Most of the conversations I now have originate from a call or email follow-up to a chance meeting at a conference, event or just comment on a forum. - Now, "back in the day", most of the conversations tended to be "What's your career path?" or "What's your advice on whether I take Job A or Job B ?"; i.e. A very hierarchial mentor-based relationship.
- Fast-forward to today, and the conversations and the relationships are far less hierarchial , increasingly "Coaching" and something I now actively seek rather than see as an obligation.
