  1. Summary Cooperative Learning (CL)

Title: The Cooperative Learning Effects on English Reading Comprehension and Learning Motivation of EFL Freshmen

Summary:

In the journal of Ching-Ying Pan & Hui-Yi Wu, investigates the effects of cooperative learning in the reading comprehension and learning motivation of college students. The researcher claims that in this era, instruction in learning is more student-centered and communication-oriented to face in globalization and international competition which inquires English ability especially in reading. Moreover, to determine the effect of cooperative learning, the researchers conducted an experimental study. There are three research question; 1) The effect of cooperative learning instruction on English reading comprehension, 2) The effect of two instructional methods in the English learning motivation & 3) the experimental group views on cooperative learning.

In this study the researchers conduct reciprocal cooperative learning (RCL) as the cooperative learning instruction and traditional learning instructional methodology. There are 78 EFL freshmen that take English reading course, there is 44 students in experimental group that receive RCL and 34 in the comparison group that receive traditional lecture instruction. The experimental groups divided again into small heterogeneous group, and then be given a GEPT as pretest, group discussion and individual reading quiz. The comparison group is given an instruction to explain the text, discussion and individual test.

Finally, the researchers claim that the RCL instruction executes increase and advance English reading comprehension in the experimental group than traditional lecture instruction. Further, RCL instruction elevates students learning motivation, that effect student liking, self-efficacy, dedication and extrinsic motivation. In conclusion, the cooperative learning promotes the active, interactive, and effective for reading comprehension for EFL learning.

Title: Empowering The Language Learner: Language Learning Strategy Training And Self-Regulation In An EFL Classroom

Summary:

In the journal of Gabriella Torres, she investigates and identifies the behavior and analyzes strategies of “good” language learners in learning second language. In this study, the writer uses a descriptive research from literature. Gabriella analyzes any definition and taxonomies of learning strategies as knowledge of the good language learner before investigate. In this research, study the language learners in Practical English Department of Hankuk University of South Korean. In that institution communicates naturally focus on grammar and form. And then, the college students have a placement exam to determine the different level of students and give them an appropriate language focus.



The researcher claims that language learning strategy in training not only focus on strategy instruction, but also developing learning process with combining LLS training in the classroom. Next, metacognitive learning strategies have an important role to provide effective and successful in student learning English. Further, the researcher claims that create a practice opportunity with using a website is important to engage students in learning language.

Gabriella agree that awareness of self-regulatory is critical necessary component in language learning, there some factors that affects in language learning there are behavior, motivation and environment. Finally, the researcher confirm that the teacher can help the students to active and increase the effectiveness of language learning by many ways with seeing in the numerous factors. Gabriella concludes that teacher must complete the language learning tools to make the students more active and can achieve their pretention to the language proficiency in classroom.
