Course Summary
This course with intermediate ESP (English for specific purposes). Being different from GE (General English) ESP will prepare students for their future profession by teaching narrow aspects of English which are necessary to the profession. The course is aimed to improve all knowledge skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing specifically in the field of technology. The course will also teach students to read analytically, formulate theories and arguments based on the readings, and respond by composing articulate essays that utilize advanced elements of sentence structure, syntax, style, purpose, and tone to be used in professional telephone conversations, in professional emails/letters/documents as well as in professional meetings. The course will teach students to write effectively and confidently in their subject courses across the curriculum and in their professional and personal lives.

Delivery strategy
Throughout this course, every lesson gives an equal emphasis on speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.

New vocabulary is introduced for each lesson by through topic definitions or synonyms, which involves students in analyzing them in context, making sentences as well as using them in situations. Students are asked asked to practice them in context. Checking vocabulary and grammar comprehension is conducted via tests during each class.



Grammar is taught indirectly in context.

Listening is taugh through speculations, revisions and analysis of audio and video materials in group discussions and written exercises.

Reading comprehension is improved by analyzing the authentic materials using insert, brainstorming, clustering methods. This skill is assesed by tests, short-questions or a short essay to the text at the end of every knowledge module.

Writing is taught by analyzing style of authentic corresponds and practicing them. Writing is examined according to proper use of grammar rules, sentence structure, coherence and cohesion of essays at the end of a knowledge module.

Speaking is improved in group discussions, role plays, debates, round table discussions and final presentations. Speaking is assessed during each lesson by forming small teams for classroom activities such as role-plays, discussions. It’s assessed according to fluency, accuracy, and usage of complex and compound sentences and transitions.
Assessment
Students are assessed according to their active participation during the course, performance in practical classes, creative presentations of self studies and final test results. The total grade for the course is divided as follows:

  • Practical lessons: 25%

  • Self-Study: 25%

  • Final Exam: 50%


Practice assessment:

Attendance is important in gaining points as students are mostly assessed in communicative environment which involves student-to-student and student-to-teacher interaction. The total of the practice lesson grade is 25% out of which:

- Homework 8%

- Participation in classroom activities (role-plays, discussions) 5%

- Classroom exersices, tests etc 10%

- Bonus for leadership in teamwork 2%


Self-study:

Self study is assessed by checking accomplishment of workbook exercises and oral presentation. Student homework is collected and graded at the start of each lesson. Each student makes one presentation at the end of the semester.
