birkhauser.com From 1977 until his retirement in 1999, Wilhelm Holzbauer was Head of one of the three master classes for architecture at University of Applied Arts Vienna. His teach- ing activity was supported by a number of Assistant Lecturers and Assistants, amongst them Dimitris Manikas, Heiner Fürst, Ernst Mayr, Roman Delugan and others. Under the tuition of this fortuitous constellation of teachers, the students created fantasy projects and designs for actual construction projects current at the time, some of which were overtaken by events and some of which are still current today. Some of the students from that time are now recognized architects (e.g. Carlo Baumschlager, Roman Delugan, Hubert Hermann, Ernst Mayr, Francy Valentiny, Susanne Zottl and many others) and have numerous completed buildings to their name. This publication compares the student designs of these architects with those of their current work.

G er m an Ein neuer Hauptbahnhof und ein neues Stadtviertel von der Größe eines Wiener Innenstadtbezirks sind eine hochkomple- xe Aufgabe für Planer, Architekten, Ingenieure und ausführen- de Firmen und eine enorme Herausforderung an die Zusam- menarbeit zwischen den verschiedenen ÖBB-Dienststellen und mit den vielen Institutionen der Stadt Wien. Drei transeuropäische Korridore kreuzen sich in Wien und werden im Hauptbahnhof miteinander verbunden. Etwa 100 Kilometer Gleise, 300 Weichen und 30.000 Quadratmeter neue Brückentragwerke auf sechs Kilometern Länge – das sind einige Eckdaten der neuen Bahninfrastruktur. Mittelpunkt ist der Hauptbahnhof mit fünf überdachten zwölf Meter brei- ten Inselbahnsteigen, mit seinem spektakulären Rautendach. Die Bahnsteige bilden eigentlich eine Eisenbahnbrücke, denn unterhalb befindet sich das Aufnahmegebäude mit fußboden- beheizten Wartebereichen, Reisezentrum, Einkaufszentrum und Garage. Die Wärmeenergie für die Fußbodenheizung kommt aus Fernwärme und Geothermie. Garagen sind auch für etwa 1000 Fahrräder vorgesehen. Mit dem Neubau der Bahninfrastruktur verschränkt, entsteht ein neues Stadtvier- tel. Dort werden 13.000 Menschen rund um einen großen Park wohnen und 20.000 Menschen arbeiten. Der Bildungs- campus für 1200 Schüler wurde am 1. September und die Verkehrsstation am 10. Oktober 2014 eröffnet. Ein Buch kann nur Ausschnitte eines Projektes dieser Dimen- sion ausstellen. Umso wichtiger ist es, dass die Bildauswahl als pars pro toto steht. Die Bilder und Fotos geben das wieder, was der eigentliche Kern des Projektes Hauptbahnhof Wien ist: das harmonische Zusammenwirken von Bauwerken und ih- rer Umgebung, die erfolgreiche Zusammenarbeit von Planern, Architekten, Baumeistern und vielen Arbeitern wie Baggerfüh- rern oder Erdarbeitern, die Synergie von unterschiedlichsten Materialien, wobei Stahl, Glas und Beton die Außenwirkung dominieren. Diesem Dokumentationsband gelingt es mit eindrucksvollen Bildern der Architektur, von Innen- und Außenräumen, dieser Atmosphäre der Zusammengehörigkeit während des Baugeschehens, der Freude und dem Eifer bei Entstehung dieses Jahrhundertprojektes gerecht zu werden.
