Lützow 7 owe their reputation of long stand-

ing to the representative civic open spaces

that they have designed for the German

Chancellery, the Reichstag building and the

Jewish Museum in Berlin, among many

others. Yet their design approach of “repre-

sentative tranquility”, as one of the book’s

contributions is entitled, has produced about

one thousand projects over the years – seven

of which, more exactly 5 built + 2 under

construction, from Germany, Belgium, Italy

and Ireland, form one of the main parts in

this landscape-architectural monograph.

Other sections strive to grasp the essence

of Lützow 7’s approach to landscape design

in a panoramic portfolio and also in a directo-

ry to important design tasks and typical so-

lutions in the realm between wilderness and

detail. Tom Sieverts, the creator of the “in-

between city” paradigm, and Richard Weller

of PennDesign, well acquainted with the

partners Cornelia Müller and Jan Wehberg’s

work, contribute their personal views.

new attractive landscapes on industrial wastelands

Coping with post-industrial brownfields is an

issue throughout Europe and North America.

A point of departure for their broad rediscov-

ery in Germany was the refurbishment of an

abandoned steelworks from 1990 on by Peter

Latz which subsequently became Duisburg

Nord Landscape Park. There, industrial relics

were not demolished or converted but per-

ceived as integral parts of the overall con-

cept and then imbued with new meaning and

use – a kind of excavation of the future. Many

additional projects with a similar approach

were created in the past decades, among

them Parc del Clòt in Barcelona, Parque do

Tejo e Trancão in Lisbon or Michel Desvigne’s

Parc aux Angéliques in Bordeaux, currently

under construction.

This book does not only describe a system-

atic framework for the use of post-industrial

ruins it also contextualizes them in design

history and analyzes their transformation in

design theory. The author, professor for

landscape design at Copenhagen University,

covers a wide range of topics, linking 19th

century Romanticism’s preoccupation with

ruins to industrial decline (exemplified by

Detroit) and then on to the subsequent

Renaissance of the transformed landscape

and its refound beauty.

At the beginning of the 1990s, European

landscape architecture started to appear on

the international radar with the Parc de la

Villette in Paris and the squares in Barcelona.

Today, it is an emancipated cultural disci-

pline, and Austrian landscape architecture

is on the advance in gardens, on squares and

roads, in parks, housing estates and around

institutional buildings.

This book, for the first time, contains a

comprehensive presentation of contempo-

rary Austrian landscape architecture: next-

land demonstrates how diverse the briefing,

how complex the boundary conditions and

how simple and exciting successful designs

can be. The richly illustrated book profiles

188 open spaces of the last two decades

in Austria, and accompanies these with a

photographic essay. Well-known European

landscape architects, art historians and

specialist journalists provide the historic

and international context and comment on

the status of landscape architecture in

Austria.

Lucius Burckhardt (1925–2003) taught archi-

tectural theory at Kassel University and, in

the 1980s, coined the term “Promenadology”

or the science of Strollology and developed

this into a complex and far-sighted planning

and design discipline. Given that “the land-

scape” as an idea only exists in our heads,

Burckhardt’s writings (and drawings) are not

so much concerned with beautiful vistas, but

focus instead on the multi-faceted interac-

tion a simple walk-taker has with his environ-

ment. To those who observe the environment

with their eyes wide open, interesting ques-

tions will arise again and again; for example,

why “city” and “country” can no longer be

separated so easily in the face of progressive

urbanization.

Or why we consider a viaduct to be beautiful,

but a nuclear power station an intrusion.

And also, why gardens are works of art and

should therefore be appraised as such.

This book contains 28 texts by the design and

planning critic, for the first time in English,

with the focus on landscapes, gardens as an

art form and the science of Strollology.

Lucius Burckhardt (1925–2003), Founder of the science

of Strollology, teached architecture history in Kassel.

Ernst Boerschmann was the most influential

foreign architectural researcher in China in

the first half of the twentieth century.

This book concerns his three-year research

expedition through the Chinese Empire

(1906–1909). He was the first Westerner to

systematically document China's religious

architecture, returning from his travels with

thousands of photographs, sketches, and

architectural surveys. His six major publica-

tions leading up to 1931, described here

alongside the reactions they caused, were

milestones on the path to formal study

of Chinese architectural history, long before

Chinese academics themselves began to

take interest in the subject in the 1930s.

Religious subject matter is not central in

20th century art. One might therefore

suspect that, for the avant-garde, the Span-

ish Civil War (1936–1939) would have eclipsed

religion altogether. However, as Juan José

Lahuerta argues in this book, the war caused

a considerable revival of certain themes of

religious art. In particular, it intensified Pablo

Picasso’s lifelong preoccupation with the

subject of the Crucifixion.

The work of the Swiss surrealist painter Max

von Moos (1903–1979) throws additional light

on the paradox at hand. In 1938, i.e. one year

after Picasso painted “Guernica”, von Moos

published an essay entitled “Religious Paint-

ing of Our Time” that addresses some of the

critical issues then confronted by church art:

issues of communication and expression,

realism and abstraction that turn out to offer

surprising insights into Picasso's art – if not

into modern art altogether.

Juan José Lahuerta, National Museum of Art of

Catalonia, Barcelona, and professor at the Barcelona

School of Architecture.

The Austrian artist Astrid Esslinger presents

a compilation of her work from 2003 to the

present day with this volume. She has worked

as a freelance artist since 1987. Until then

she participated in artistic projects of the

Linz artist collective Stadtwerkstatt. Her

work can be divided into three parallel phas-

es: her early pieces with textile materials

and her later paintings with acrylic colors on

canvas as well as pieces using an original

technique developed for her work while on

journeys, cut outs.

The text contribution by Birgit Rinagl concen-

trates on Esslinger’s paintings which explore

the themes of men and women, public and

private, work and free time, nature and city

as well as life and death. Tom Waibel dis-

cusses the subversive character of her hand

luggage productions and brings light to their

dark and ironic side. The introduction by Fina

Esslinger, an art historian and the daughter

of the artist, gives the reader the necessary

background knowledge on motifs and the

theoretical framework of the works, encour-

aging the reader to enjoy Esslinger’s artistic

output.

“Ahmet Oran follows in the tradition of mono-

chrome painting influenced by the Art In-

formel style. ... The essence of his painting is

characterized by a quiet assertiveness, posi-

tioning him somewhere between Mark Rothko,

Gotthard Graubner and Hubert Scheibner”

(Peter Baum).

Oran first studied painting in Istanbul and

came to Vienna in 1980, where he graduated

with a diploma under Adolf Frohner. His big

breakthrough came in 1995 when he was

awarded 2nd prize in a competition.

Oran’s work comes alive through the material

texture of the finished surface. The repro-

ductions, which demand exacting skills in

lithography and printing, as well as sensitive

graphic processing, have been carried out

by Bohatsch and Partners, the well-known

graphics studio.

The book is not a comprehensive compilation

of Ahmet Oran’s œuvre to date, but an initial

presentation of works bundled into frag-

mented groups, beginning with the current

work cycles. The book concludes with a

chronological illustrated listing of the pieces

reproduced in it.
