24 | ARt

Throughout history, and all over the world,

viewers have treated works of art as if they

were living beings: speaking to them, falling

in love with them, kissing or beating them.

Although over the past twenty years the

catalogue of individual cases of such behavior

towards art has increased immensely, there

are few attempts at formulating a theoretical

account of them, or writing the history of

how such responses were considered, de-

fined or understood. That is what this book

sets out to do: to reconstruct some crucial

chapters in the history of thought about such

reflections in Western Europe, and to offer

some building blocks towards a theoretical

account of such responses, drawing on the

work of Aby Warburg and Alfred Gell.

Caroline van eck, Leiden University, Netherlands.

A history of response to art works as living beings

First study to combine a history of Western

thought about viewers’ treatments of

statues as living beings

Combines artistic, art historical,

psychological, and anthropological

aspects of the theme

Karl Neubacher worked primarily as a graphic

designer. His posters, based on artistic

concepts, are legendary. With his blending

of elements drawn from commercial art, on

the one hand, and conceptual media art,

on the other, he was able to generate creative

fields of tension. His key means of expression

were photography and film. Neubacher’s

œuvre is to be understood within the context

of media art, and it is for this reason that it

remains relevant today.

The central preoccupation of Neubacher’s

art was his own body, which he directly em-

ployed in his performance art, whilst also

instrumentalising it as an image in its own

right in various media. The book is published

as a catalog to the big show at the Kunsthaus

Graz and is also the first comprehensive

monograph on the Austrian universal artist

Karl Neubacher.

Günther Holler-schuster is a founding

member of the art group G.R.A.M.;

Peter Pakesch is artistic director at the Landes-

museum Joanneum, Graz.

ARt | 25

In a mental institution, a child ran along cor-

ridors and staircases, brushing past iron

bars and balustrades. The building swal-

lowed the sounds it made, just as it muffled

the screams of the demented and the creak-

ing of the ancient linoleum. Some places

should be avoided by the child. Later, as a

grown-up, she will be back in a clinic; this

time as a patient, a cancer patient. She

watches as the hearses pull up. “It is urgent

that you leave the premises again”, says

the porter. He will deal with the issue of bicy-

cles later.

Esther Dischereit’s story describes the world

of mental institutions; following the Nazi

years; to be feared. And also to be feared was

probably the radio thief, who had to watch

over the child in the mental home. Even

though the child loved this child-man. Years

later, the woman knows all about it.

The question of the (photographic) construc-

tion and representation of national identity

is not limited to the ‘long 19th century’,

but is a current issue in the post-colonial,

post-global, digital world. The essays by

international contributors aim at studying

the relationship between photographic

archives and the idea of nation, yet without

focusing on single symbolic icons and in-

stead considering the wider archival and

sedimental dimension.
