Convergent and Divergent thinking.
During the education process teachers often face hurdles according to identifying learners' thinking way and finding problem-solving methods. This issue has existed even in the past times. Dr. J.P. Guilford, a psychologist, created the terms convergent and divergent thinking in 1956, to clarify the ways of arriving at the best explanation to the trouble. At this point, we can distinguish students into two groups of problem solvers divergent and convergent thinkers.
Let's talk about the former type of people, divergent thinkers are those people who always try to keep a creative mindset. Those individuals often give several solutions with the help of their inventiveness. This type of learner effort to think about situations deeply and produce divergent ways of solutions. By giving multiple answers to the problem they may come across difficulties, like choosing the appropriate one. It means this way makes people be a more critical thinkers and end up with the best key to the issue. Although learners struggle with finding an adequate and smart solution to the drawback, they could broaden their horizons by being industrious. The student may learn to assess ideas from different perspectives and understand, and learn from others as well. Take an example, if a teacher gives a task with a mentioned time limit, divergent thinkers try to find their solution and only after that they may find a diverse topic related videos from internet webs or read various articles and newspapers to optional ways of solution. Then they may determine what is the best solution to the problem. Divergent thinking is a good way to find creative solutions to a problem, by doing so learners might identify new opportunities. One minus point of this type of thinking way would be time management. It is clear that working on any project and finding several options for planning may require the person to be patient enough, because it may take a massive amount of time. Nevertheless, solving too quickly may cause make decisions in people's comfort zone instead of taking a risk. In this case, adopting a learning mindset could be a beneficial part of divergent thinking.
Regarding convergent thinkers, those people who try to overcome their predicaments with convergent thinking ways can easily mention possible solutions. Convergent thinkers mostly focus on reaching one well-defined solution to a problem. Logic and statistics may be a chosen matter of convergent thinking. For instance, if a physic teacher asks to solve one question, a convergent thinker may quickly solve it with the help of a given sample answer or given formula. One of the benefits of convergent thinkers may be a quicker way to arrive at a solution. Another one might be sure and not be hesitated, because they do not leave any room for ambiguity. Convergent thinkers clearly understand which solution will most efficiently eliminate your problem and this process could help to figure out a concrete solution to any problem. In addition to this, the solution derived by using convergent thinking processes is the most accurate one most of the time, because they rely on exact knowledge and techniques that are tested before. However, the answer procured by such type of thinking is either completely right or completely wrong, because there are not any other options.
All in all, both methods of thinking are equally valuable, both of them have their own negative and positive part. Divergent thinkers rely on creativity and add colors to the organization of solutions, while convergent thinkers rely on logic and increase performance speed, especially when people are under pressure and a deadline is involved. Generally, the main aim of both types of thinking is to find the best solution to a problem.
