Cooperative Learning Elements Face-to-Face Interaction Positive Interdependence Individual Accountability Group Processing Collaborative Skills

Learners engage in face-to-face interaction to discuss concepts being learned, relate them to prior knowledge and experiences, clarify aspects of an assignment, and work out how to solve problems.

Positive Interdependence is achieved when group members understand that they will succeed or fail as one group. The definition of shared goals, delineation of roles, and division of labor and resources can aid positive interdependence. In addition, having a portion of each student's grade dependent on the group's performance promotes positive interdependence.

Social loafing, or an individual's putting in less effort, can be prevented by the incorporation of individual accountability. To put individual accountability in place, a lesson must be structured to measure both the group's achievement of learning goals and individual members' achievement of learning goals.

After group members have completed a task, group processing enables them to reflect and analyze how well they carried out the work, including their use of social skills. Group processing can help groups improve their performance in the future.

In addition to learning content, participants in cooperative learning develop collaborative skills, such as communication, conflict management, leadership, and decision-making. To help students build these teamwork skills, teachers need to provide instruction, supports, and guidance for these skills in cooperating learning lessons.
