GLOSSARYAntithesis – a balanced statement; a figure of speech in which words and phrases with opposite meanings are balanced against each other. Apostrophe – to turn away from the general audience of a work to address a specific group, person, or thing (see Personification), including those that are absent, dead, or imaginary. Assonance – The repetition of vowel sounds in stressed syllables (see also Alliteration). Assonance differs from rhyme in that rhyme is a similarity of vowel and consonant: "lake" and "fake" demonstrate rhyme, "lake" and "fate” demonstrate assonance. Historical counterpart a person or thing closely resembling another, especially in function: Our president is the counterpart of your prime minister. Historical novel, a novel that has as its setting a period of history and that attempts to convey the spirit, manners, and social conditions of a past age with realistic detail and fidelity (which is in some cases only apparent fidelity) to historical fact. Mellow Gentle and understanding, especially from being mature or experienced: "She had seen him as a survival of a leisurely and tolerant age, a mellow man" (Elisabeth Ogilvie). Metonymy: a figure of speech that substitutes the name of a related object, person, or idea for the subject at hand. Mood: the feeling, or atmosphere, that a writer creates for the reader. Connotative words, sensory images, and figurative language contribute to the mood of a selection, as do the sound and rhythm of the language. Panoramic portrait An image showing a field of view approximating, or greater than, that of the human eye – about 160° by 75° – may be termed panoramic. This generally means it has an aspect ratio of 2:1 or larger, the image being at least twice as wide as it is high. The resulting images take the form of a wide strip. Personality the combination of characteristics or qualities that form an individual's distinctive character. "she had a sunny personality that was very engaging" Satirical power given to heartless sarcasm satire applies to writing that exposes or ridicules conduct, doctrines, or institutions either by direct criticism or more often through irony, parody, or caricature. a satire on the Congress repartee implies the power of answering quickly, pointedly, or wittily.
