The global environmental monitoring system implies an ecological analysis of the interaction between people and nature within the biosphere. National monitoring is based on carrying out such actions on the territory of one state. The definition of regional monitoring is quite difficult to pick up, as well as to give boundaries to its scale.
   

В России в нормативных актах экомониторинга регион определяется как субъект РФ. Нельзя не сказать о существовании и более масштабных по пространству мониторингов акваторий и площадей межгосударственного уровня, например, Балтийское и Северное моря, Альпы, внутригосударственного, например, Байкал и Урал. Говоря о локальном мониторинге, отметим, что он предполагает анализ пространства единичного источника, на который оказывают влияние промышленные предприятия, а также предприятия муниципального образования (города и района).
