Director: Lee Tamahori Story: British secret agent James Bond 007 was captured because he was betrayed in a mission of assassinating Colonel Moon of North Korea. After being rescued, Bond escaped from MI6 and went to Cuba to find out who betrayed him. Bond met a female secret agent called Jinx. Bond discovered that his betrayal was affiliated to a young and rich diamond businessman Gustav Graves. Graves invited Bond to his party in Iceland. In Iceland, Bond and Jinx discovered Graves was originally Colonel Moon. He used gene surgery to change himself into Caucasian, and planned to use a satellite weapon called Icarus to invade South Korea. Bond and Jinx went to North Korea, destructed Icarus and killed Graves and his henchmen.
Die Another Day is the twentieth James Bond movie, and it strove to break many traditions of the James Bond series. Spectator can see much advancement in many fields like lighting and camera shooting.
Here are some of the characteristics, strengths and skills discussed in the class which make Die Another Day an outstanding and good movie.
Text Text is “how elements of a film come together”. James Bond movies, including Die Another Day, have its own text. The elements of Bond movies include a handsome British spy working for his government. He would have many special gadgets to use. He would meet some stunning beautiful women and villains, and involve in many fights and love affairs. The above elements combine to the text of the James Bond movies, and they can all be found in Die Another Day. They are what the spectator expect to see in this movie.
Repetition and Difference James Bond has been an unbeatable, handsome hero over the 40 years. Whenever he was captured by the villains in the previous nineteen movies, he could manage to escape very quickly by using his wit and gadgets. However, in Die Another Day, he was captured by the North Korean and was tortured for about one and a half-year. He was as dirty and ugly as a beggar at the time when he was being rescued. The image of Bond has been completely broken for the first time. Therefore, Die Another Day has added new element and new thinking to the James Bond series.
Flashback Flashback is a scene that return to previous events in the character's experience by using a scene that represents the past occasion. This skill has not been used by the previous nineteen James Bond movies due to the quick movement of the content. However, in Die Another Day, it is used for the first time. When Bond was lying on the sickbed, he recalled the moment when he was being tortured by the North Korean. This can be considered as a breakthrough of the James Bond movies.
Iris A camera effect for the purpose of traversing from one scene to the next through a circle is called iris. In all 007 movies, James Bond comes out and shoots towards the spectator in a circular scene. Then the circle moves around the screen and introduces the next one. This is a very famous scene. It also appears in Die Another Day. After James Bond shot, the circle moves to the bottom left corner of the screen, then it starts to enlarge and introduces the next scene. This skill is called “iris-in” and this skill is seldom used today in other movies.
Genre The James Bond movies are usually considered to belong to the genre of action and detective movie. Only one of the Die Another Day’s predecessors is considered to be science fiction film (it only happens in Moonraker, 1979). However, Die Another Day can also be considered in the genre of science fiction. The part of the story includes the “gene surgery”, which said that a person could change his face to the other’s through changing genes. It seems that it cannot be made possible by today’s biological technologies. A feeling of science fiction in Die Another Day could be seen by that. Intertextuality Intertextuality refers to the relationship between one film and others. It happens in previous 007 movies like On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969) and For Your Eyes Only (1981, which has been shown in the class). Intertextuality appears intensively and intentionally in this film. For example, in the laboratory of the armourer Q, the weapons and gadgets in the previous James Bond movies reappeared again, like the jet-propelled Suit (in Thunderball, 1965) and the Crocodile Boat (in Octopussy, 1983). Besides, the scenes in Die Another Day try to imitate its predecessors. A typical example is the scene happened on the beach in which the character Jinx came out from the sea and went onto the beach in bikini. This scene intimates the scene in Dr. No (1962). These make the movie more interesting and attractive to 007 friends. It is one of the highlights of Die Another Day.
Parallel Editing Parallel editing makes two separate actions happen at the same time. It is frequently used in action films including the James Bond series, as it gives the impression of tense. This can be illustrated in the climax of Die Another Day. In the climax, James Bond was fighting with Graves, while Bond girl Jinx was fighting with Graves’ henchman Miranda Frost. Both actions happened on the Korean’s airplane at the same time. The movie shows the two fights alternately, shifting from one fight to another continuously. Each clip of fights lasted not more than 10 seconds. This creates a fast and tense situation. This skill is not frequently used in other Bond movies. This makes the climax of Die Another Day one of the most exciting and breathtaking among the James Bond series.
Invisible Editing Invisible editing means the editing with no transition that is so well formed that the viewers are not aware that a splice has taken place. It is very important in action movies since the audience is psychologically intent on the moving images. Invisible editing is noticed in Die Another Day, especially in the front and the climax of the movie. Take the front part as an example. When Bond escaped and chased the villain Colonel Moon on hovercrafts, most slices of pictures last no longer than 3 seconds. This can be compared with that of the Jurassic Park, which editing is also 3 seconds long. That creates a fast and exciting scene in the movie.
Camera Distance Close-up is used to emphasis something. Medium shot is used to capture action. Long shot is used to capture the setting and the environment. All the skills were well used when capturing the car-chase in Die Another Day. At that car-chase, James Bond’s car was being chased by another car on a frozen lake in Iceland. Close-up was mainly used to capture the facial expression of the two characters and the weapons of the car (like machine guns). Medium shot was used to capture the motions of the two cars. Long shot was used to capture the environment. The skills of using various camera distances were used during that car-chase. Long Shot Medium shot Close-up Apart from the above points which are taught in the class, there are also many features that make Die Another Day such a popular movie. They include:
1. The dialogues were well-written. 2. The Ice Palace, which was built for the shooting of Die Another Day, is magnificent. 3. The stunts used were great. 4. It is one of the most exciting 007 movies
In conclusion, Die Another Day is a good movie with various skills, and it will surely be a movie that is worth watching and being studied.
