Do you think the culture on social media has become toxic for celebrities?
Many people believe that life without social media is impossible to stay and live but have you ever think about using social media can be harmful not only for celebrities but also for us. In the 21st century, kids, teenagers, and even adults are using social media. It has become a part of our generation’s lives while celebrities have a powerful impact on people and it can change their whole lifestyle because teenagers or adults see them as role models. There are many events which are changed a celebrity's life and in this essay, I will discuss how culture on social media has become toxic for the star.
First of all, I want to give as example Korean singers or idols, how global concern has risen recently about the negative effects of social media such as Instagram, Twitter, Vlive, and Facebook which provide the chance for online abuse and trolling. Sulli, the former member of the f(x) group, died last year and recently her sister talked about the reason for her death. The main reason was she received a lot of hate comments from her fans because of posting an offensive picture on social media and her bad attitude on live video. As most K-pop and drama fans already know that Sulli's death is not the first victim of cyber bullying. Even one of the singer mentioned that «Many entertainers talked about their depression coming from that kind of harassment environments" In addition, some American singers also were quite from their social media accounts because toxic hate comments towards them. I think people should stop to send them rude comments and make their life more challenging. People should stop to watch singers whom they hate because every people have different taste and different opinion.
Furthermore, one of the most common toxic events for celebrities is leaving the group or end their career because of culture on social media. Korean K-pop industry is strict and becoming more difficult for them. Most of the singers left their group because of false information written by anti-fans on social media and made them leave that industry forever. Common news about bullying or drugs can end their career so easily, even if they put more afford into their job. I don't think that they have to suffer because of that kind of information, and their company, the industry should protect and support them rather than kick them out from the group.
To conclude with culture on social media is not always safe for celebrities while many people believe that a celebrity's image or post can affect teenagers and adult life. However, I think celebrities should not put themselves into depression because of social standards, and also toxic hate comments towards them while fan's standard and opinion can change anytime.
