General changes at this stage
(7-12 months)
Teething
Many mothers believe that the teeth begin to appear after the
child is born, but in fact the teeth start to grow in the fifth month
of gestation. The infant will get twenty teeth, which are known as
milk teeth. There are four front teeth, four molars and two
canines in each jaw. Care of the baby’s teeth begins in the fourth
month of pregnancy; the mother’s eating a nutritious and
balanced diet is very important in the formation of the teeth.
The milk teeth begin to appear at the beginning of the sixth
month and they continue to appear until the child is two and a
half years old. If the appearance of the baby’s teeth is delayed
until the end of the first year, it is essential to consult a doctor.
Teeth usually appear in the lower jaw before the upper jaw, but
there may be individual differences between one child and
another with regard to the order in which the teeth appear.

Common signs of teething
1. The gums appear inflamed and swollen
2. Excessive drooling and red cheeks
3. A slight cough
4. The baby wants to bite anything he can put in his mouth
5. The baby feels some pain when his teeth first penetrate the
gum, which makes him drool
6. Irritability and bad temper
7. He chews solid things and sucks his fingers
There is a widespread belief among some mothers that teething
is accompanied by diarrhoea, fever and chest infections, but in
fact there is no direct connection between these symptoms and
teething. Hence the mother should not ignore these symptoms
just because they happen to occur at the same time as teething,
and she should ask the doctor about these symptoms.
