Manners and etiquette that you should
teach your child
At this stage the child is like a piece of clay that can be formed
and shaped. If we cannot teach our children when they are
young, then when they grow older doing so will be difficult if not
impossible.
Hence parents have to instill good manners in the child at this
stage.
Table manners
There are certain points of etiquette when eating that the
parents should teach to their children, as follows:
1. Washing the hands before and after eating.
2. Saying “Bismillah” before eating and saying “al-­‐hamdu Lillah”
after eating.
3. Not objecting to the food or showing lack of appreciation or
disrespect towards it.
4. Eating from what is close, following the teachings of the
Prophet (S.A.W) to the boy whose hand was wandering all over

the platter: “O child, mention the name of Allah, eat with your
right hand and eat from that which is close to you.”
5. Not eating whilst lying down or reclining, so that proper
respect may be shown to the food.
6. Praying for the host when one has finished eating. When the
Prophet (S.A.W) was invited to a meal and he had finished eating,
he would say to his host: “May fasting people break their fast
with you, may righteous people eat your food and may the angels
pray for you.”
7. Not starting to eat before the adults start.
