English for Academic Purposes (EAP) or Academic English is one of the genres of English language, which is considered as a conventional example of English that satisfies to the requirements of higher education institutions. It means that it is a type of language, which is used in an academic environment. However, General English is non-technical concept that is used in for expressing the language that is used in people’s daily life. Both of these styles are pretty important, but have many differences.

For instance, their first dissimilarity is purpose. The course of GE can be described as a language without any particular purpose. It is used to improve overall abilities of learner in handwriting, in reading and in making conversations (listening and speaking) on a wide spectrum of topics, while EAP’s themes are only related to academic field. Nevertheless, EAP is specially designed to improve language proficiency in order to achieve success in the university classroom. During the process of studying abilities as academic reading and writing, making presentations, note taking and analyzing are developed as well as overall language skills.
Their another vital difference is writing. General writing is used in letters, e-mails, advertisements or posters. In comparison, academic style of writing is used in academic disciplines, projects, essays, abstracts and reports, which expect special series of skills. It is more formal, structured and complex rather than general one. Academic writing avoids contractions, slang or informal words, whereas in general style of writing they are acceptable. Punctuation, grammar and vocabulary are important features of an academic style. It has it is own set of rules that should be strictly followed and often uses passive voice or third persons perspective. Moreover, this type of writing is mainly based on facts and issues, instead of writer’s opinion. To sum up, in order to take EAP lessons learner must have knowledge of language at least at intermediate level, while GE is available for any level.
Studying the EAP course I feel that I achieved a new level in usage of English language and to some extent, I started thinking in a more critical way and became more confident. After finishing this subject, I undoubtedly can say that I enriched my vocabulary with academic words and improved my grammar. Furthermore, it developed my writing skills, making it more formal, concise, well-structured and comprehendible. Summarizing, this course boosted my overall proficiency in English making it closer to be able to successfully study at university.
Despite this I still feel that my current knowledge is not enough for getting tertiary education. In addition, I have some serious problems with my time management in writing. It takes me much time to find proper information, make an outline and finally writing paragraphs or essays. For dealing with it I am practicing speedwriting. Another problem is my fluency. In order to improve this skill, I am trying to communicate with native speakers, using applications.
In conclusion, both of these subjects are essential parts of modern English language and due to their prevalence, play crucial role in lives of many people. Being able to use these styles is beneficial for everyone and open up greater career opportunities. Moreover, they stand out a person and make him fit for survival in today’s world. (543 words)
