Ask a friend o r teacher to listen carefully to your recording. Are CD 2 there any words you pronounced incorrectly? Practise saying the w ords w ith accurate pronunciation. Keep a lis t of words you have m ispronounced and test yourself frequently. Now listen to the sample answers. Exam tip: You w ill have noticed that the sample answers contain contractions, e.g. I'm (for I am). Contractions are extremely common in spoken English, and using them can make your English sound more natural and fluent. Check how to pronounce them, however, or your English could become unclear. Some contractions are very inform al and are better avoided in the exam, e.g. a in 't and in it [for is n 't it). Studying the sample answers w ill show you which contractions are suitable. 7 6 Speaking for IELTS G ram m ar: The passive Unit 9 13 You can use the passive [be + past participle) to introduce an argum ent or opinion. The im personal subject it is often used. Study these examples. It is often argued that comm unities are breaking down, [it + be + past participle + th a t. . .] Saint Petersburg is considered by many to be Russia s m ost beautiful city, (subject + be + past participle + to infinitive) We use the passive if the perform er of the action is unim portant or unknown. Other verbs typical in this type of construction are believe, say, think, find, claim, reported, prove, and show. Example: It has been conclusively shown that children benefit from a stable home environment. Decide if the follow ing sentences can be re w ritte n in the passive. If so, rew rite them.
