In contrast, this example represents a dependent clause. It is clear it is not a
full sentence as it does not have any punctuation mark at the end. What is
more, even if it
did have a period at the end, it can’t be complete. That is
because the adverb
until needs to be completed, you must ask yourself until
what? On top of this, you must not confuse a dependent clause with a phrase.
This is not a verb phrase as it contains more
than just a noun and a verb, it
also has an adverb in it.
Until Jessica returned, her dog
would sit looking out of the
window waiting for her.
Dependent clauses provide additional information to independent clauses as
they can’t stand alone by themselves. In this example, you can see that the
dependent clause has been added to an independent clause to show what was
happening until Jessica returned.
