Englishtown Corporate Users Manual Englishtown teaches complete English: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Our courses combine self-study exercises with live, teacher-led instruction in our virtual classroom. All of our instruction is on the web, meaning you can study anytime and anywhere. Englishtown’s certified teachers are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This manual will help you get started with Englishtown, and also has additional tips should you need them during your studies.

Version 2.1, November 2003 Before you start: the Technical Check The Englishtown school is completely web-based, so there are no heavy downloads or installations. The school uses standard web technologies which come pre-installed with most computers. To ensure that you have these installed on your machine, you should take the Technical Check. (For a full list, please see the system requirements on page 10.)
1. On the Englishtown home page, click "Compatibility and Technical Check". 2. The Technical Check will appear in a pop-up window. Follow the instructions. The check will alert you to missing software or browser settings that need to be changed, as well as the recommended steps to take. 3. With the exception of the voice chat step, the Technical Check is fully automated. For the voice chat step, you are asked to answer a few questions.
Once you have completed the technical check and resolved any issues, you are ready to sign up for your first Englishtown course.

Your Englishtown contact or training manager should have given you these codes. If you do not have them, please see your contact person. You cannot sign up without these. Get started 1. Have your codes readily available and go to http://corporate.englishtown.com. 2. Click on the link "New students: Sign Up".

First determine your placement level: 1. To determine your Englishtown level, click on "Take a placement test". 2. A separate window with the test will appear. 3. At the end of the test, a placement level will be recommended for you. 4. Roll over the various bars at the bottom of the page to see what each level means. Next, select your first course: 1. In the dropdown box, select the level recommended for you. The page will display courses that are appropriate for that level. (The image above displays the courses available for the Intermediate level.) 2. Click the round button for the course you want to take. 3. For Business English or Test Preparation, you need to make an additional choice of topic or course type. Click the dropdown boxes to see the selections. 4. When you have made your selections, click [Enroll]. Please know that you can only take one course at a time, but that you can change course at any time and as often as you like. An Englishtown course consists of consists of 4 parts: Watch, Learn, Try & Test. This gives you the opportunity to first see (Watch) the language used in a specific context, next, you are able to study (Learn) specific language, vocabulary, and grammar structures by completing 5 self-study lessons; this is followed by a section that allows you to use (Try) the language of the unit and put to practice what you have been studying by interacting with a native-English speaking teacher and students from all over the world; finally, you are tested (Test) on the language elements covered in the unit.

Every Map contains a list of unit topics, words, grammar, and pronunciation tips. Clicking on words will launch the interactive Flashcard tool.
The Learn section contains the following series of skill-based lessons, each of which is 45 minutes long. These skill-based lessons are presented in the same order in every Classic English course. Listening; contain authentic language from native speakers around the world as well as the opportunity for you to practice recording your voice for comparison with examples. Speaking; give you the opportunity to pronounce a variety of sounds as well as the opportunity to practice a variety of speaking strategies. Detailed pronunciation instruction is given in your native language along with videos, sounds, and diagrams of mouth movements.

Writing; focus on correct written expression for a range of settings, with special attention paid to spelling, punctuation, and grammatical structures. This writing is different from what we offer in the Try section, which is an ETS or teacher-graded writing.

Version 2.1, November 2003 Review; provides a summary of language studied in the unit by examining the Movie script for examples of language taught in the course and then provides additional practice activities.

ETS writings can be found in units 1-3 & 5-7 and teacher-led writings can be found in units 4 & 8, excluding the Introduction course which has no teacher-led writing.
Test; found at the end of every unit and a final test at the end of every level.
An Englishtown certificate will be provided at the end of each level, after all 8 units are completed and all completion requirements have been met. When your certificate is ready you will see a link in your Progress Report.

When you come back next time to Englishtown, all you have to do is enter your username and password that you received when you signed up.

Version 2.1, November 2003 How to change courses With your Englishtown license, you can take as many courses as you want. You can also change courses as often as you want. Change in the middle of a course to try another – you can then return to the first course and pick up where you left off. Changing courses is easy and takes less than a minute.

To take full advantage of Englishtown Corporate services, the following are required:

Englishtown Virtual Classroom Centra software (automatically installed) is required to use voice-over-IP functionality. Note: Users must be able to download signed ActiveX controls Additional software: Windows Media Player 7.0 or higher (native in Windows 2000 and XP operating systems) All Windows 2000 systems must have “Service Pack 3” already installed. Version 2.1, November 2003 Frequently asked questions Is it necessary to have speakers connected to my computer in order to use Englishtown? To participate in listening and conversation exercises it is necessary. For the live conversation lessons we also recommend a headset instead of speakers
All the teachers who teach at Englishtown are native English speakers. Furthermore, they have a teaching degree and several years of teaching experience. They are located all over the world, in all different time zones. Can I quit a lesson and then come back later and start where I finished? Absolutely. If you have not finished your lesson, it will be listed as “In progress”. How much time does a course take? Each course is of different length, and is also dependent on how much time you decide to spend in the speaking lessons. (Remember, you have unlimited access.). However, each lesson has estimation to how much time it takes so you can time your daily visits. What different types of English can I choose? Englishtown offers the following programs: Classic English, Business English, Industry Specific English, TOEFL and TOIEC preparations, and Travel English
Yes, you can switch as many times and as often as you want. However, we recommend that you have as a goal to finish each course before moving on to a new.
As often as you like, you have unlimited access to the conversation classrooms. A new lesson starts every hour, and lasts 45 minutes. But be on time – after 15 minutes we close the chat room, and then you have to wait until the next session. Is there any limitation at all to how much I can use Englishtown? No. You have unlimited access to Englishtown as long as your license is running. What questions will appear on the final tests? The questions relate to the material which you have studied in your course. Can I use Englishtown at home? Yes! The only thing you need is a PC and an Internet connection. When I have finished a course, do I get a certificate? When you have finished the final test and filled out the evaluation you will get a certificate from an American university.
To participate in voice discussion, you need a microphone and headphones or speakers. Your computer also needs to have a sound card for these words.
Englishtown is available in 12 languages. To change the language you view the site in, use the ‘View the site in’ box at the bottom of each page.

When you see this message, your username and password is being mailed to you. When you come back to Englishtown, instead of signing up, just login in the area titled “Returning students”. How are my course grades calculated? Your final grade is a weighted combination of the grades you receive for the self study lessons, writings, discussions, and the tests. In the Classic English courses, the final grade is 80% your unit grades, and 20% your final test. The unit grades in turn are calculated as self study lessons 25%, discussion 45% (except unit 4 where it is 35%, writings 0% (except unit 4 where it is 10%) and unit test 30%. In the Business English courses, the final grade is again 80% your unit grades, and 20% you final test. The unit grades however are here calculated as self study lessons 50%, discussion 40%, and case studies 10%.
When your student license at Englishtown expires, your company may provide you with a new license. To extend your license, you do not have to go through the sign up process again. Instead: 1. Login to Englishtown. 2. Click on the link "My Account" in the top right hand side on every page. 3. On the left hand side, click "Account status" 4. In the box in the page, enter the new license code and click [Update]. What if I already enrolled before in an Englishtown course? You may already have signed up privately for Englishtown courses at www.englishtown.com. In that case, you can use your company student code instead of your private subscription to Englishtown. First you need to activate your company’s student code 1. Login to the Englishtown corporate site (http://corporate.englishtown.com). 2. Click on the link "My Account" in the top right hand side on every page. 3. On the left hand side, click "Account status" 4. When prompted, enter the new license code and click [Update]. Then you need to cancel your private subscription 5. Login to the Englishtown consumer site (http://www.englishtown.com). 6. Click on the link "My Account" in the top right hand side on every page. 7. On the left hand side, click "Account status" 8. Click the link "Cancel". Follow the instructions that appear in your window.
