particularly about which markets they should produce
for. Focusing entirely on producing one or two products
for the international market can have disastrous results if
the world market prices for those products fall.
For many small-scale farmers, producing for a
local market, rather than producing riskier export crops,
is a rational, entrepreneurial choice. However, even
producing for the local market has risks. Often local
markets are over supplied resulting in low prices and,
therefore, low profitability. For other small-scale farmers,
the most rational decision is to farm first for home
consumption and then for the market.
