  1. Who is the author?

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (February 27, 1807 – March 24, 1882) was an American poet and educator whose works include "Paul Revere's Ride", The Song of Hiawatha, and Evangeline. He was the first American to translate Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy and was one of the fireside poets from New England. He was a was an American poet of the Romantic period. There are two reasons for the popularity and significance of Longfellow's poetry. First, he had the gift of easy rhyme. He wrote poetry as a bird sings, with natural grace and melody. Read or heard once or twice, his rhyme and meters cling to the mind long after the sense may be forgotten.He wrote about a multitude of subjects: slavery in Poems on Slavery, literature of Europe in an anthology The Poets and Poetry of Europe, and American Indians in The Song of Hiawatha.

  1. What does the title tell you about the poem?

The title is " The Slave's Dream ". In my opinion, it describes the slave’s dying moment as lost in a dream. He dreams of his African home, imagines a life of fun in the company of his kinsfolk, and fancies himself as a king. Next descriptions of the poem is also about this dream. So, the title is definitely suitable for its meaning.

Yes, definitely, why not. Because while the analyzing the poem , we should know about the author and its meaning. The poem ‘Slave’s Dream’ was one of the seven poems on slavery included in the collection Poems on Slavery, written in 1842. It was written 19 years before the American Civil war (1861-5) which led to abolishing of slavery in USA. Well aware of their tepid content, Longfellow described his Poems on Slavery in a letter 23rd May 1843 to Isaac Appleton Jewett that they are “so mild that even a slave holder might read them without his appetite for breakfast.”The Slave’s Dream is about a series of dreams of a victim of slavery during the 19th.

"The Slave's Dream" is an anti-slavery poem because it ends with the view that the slave is happier dead that enslaved. The poem portrays the grim nature of slavery by depicting the slave's dream. The slave is shown sleeping near a rice field with a sickle in his hand.

It is about a slave who, while being beaten, escapes into his own mind. He has a dream about his former life in Africa, and is then able to release his pain and die in peace.

There are multiple literary devices used in Longfellow's poem "The Slave's Dream." In the first line, the "i" sound in the words "beside" and "rice" are examples of assonance. Assonance is when a line of poetry contains repetition of a vowel sound. In the second line, "His sickle in his hand" shows alliteration.

The main theme in Longfellow's The Slave's Dream is the nature of freedom. This is evident in the way the slave is free whilst dreaming but not when he's actually awake. Another theme is escaping, because slaves did not have an easy life, so the author wanted to describe their life and wishes.

All in all, this poem is about slavery and its consequences, I mean the Slave's life was so difficult and through his death, his soul has broken the fetters of his body and attained freedom. The author portrays the lost dreams and ambitions of a slave. This slave is captivated by the images of his family and native land. He collapses and dreams about his "Native Land" where he was the king pre-slavery. It is a anti slavery and it is about death.

Abolitionism is a movement against the slavery. Abolitionist literature depicted the life of the slave and became a political tool which the moral suasionists used effectively to sway sentiment toward their position. There are some examples of this literature: Uncle Tom's Cabin, A Key to Uncle Tom's Cabin, and John Brown's Cabin.

In 1852, author and social activist Harriet Beecher Stowe popularized the antislavery movement with her novel Uncle Tom's Cabin. Stowe's novel became a turning point for the abolitionist movement; she brought clarity to the harsh reality of slavery in an artistic way that inspired many to join anti-slavery movements.

Tom maintains a steadfastly Christian attitude toward his own suffering, and Stowe imbues Tom’s death with echoes of Christ’s.

Uncle Tom - A good and pious man, Uncle Tom is the protagonist of Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Even under the worst conditions, Uncle Tom always prays to God and finds a way to keep his faith. As the novel progresses, the cruel treatment that Tom suffers at the hands of Simon Legree threatens his belief in God, but Tom withstands his doubts and dies the death of a Christian martyr.
