HE 2001 WORLD 
premiere of Moulin 
Rouge! began with a 
troupe of red-plumed 
dancers doing the can-can to 
the tune of “Hey Big Spender” 
— “appropriate,” wrote The 
Hollywood Reporter, as the man 
footing the bill was in atten-
dance: News Corp. CEO Rupert 
Murdoch. Aft er the dancing, 
the fi lm’s stars, Ewan McGregor 
and Nicole Kidman, declared 
the festival open in French 
and English. The big musi-
cal numbers were greeted by 
“spontaneous applause,” wrote 
THR. Tom Rothman, then-head 
of 20th Century Fox, says the 
idea behind the spectacle was 
to “bring this movie to Cannes 
head high and proud. ” Though 
it lost the Palme d’Or to Nanni 
Moretti’s The Son’s Room, Moulin 
Rouge! went on to gross $175 mil-
lion worldwide. Luhrmann opens 
Cannes again this year in grand 
(and 3D) fashion with The Great 
Gatsby.
