What is computer hardware?
Computer hardware is a term that refers to all of the tangible and physical components of a computer, meaning that they can be touched and seen.

Computer software, conversely, cannot to touched or seen because it is a series of computer-written text and instructions that allow a computer to execute processes and functions.

What is the purpose of computer hardware?
Computer hardware is required for a computer to function. It is complimentary to software. Without either of these components, a computer would not be able to operate.

Each piece of a computer has a specific purpose. For example, the central processing unit enables the computer to execute processes through written code and software, whereas the internal disk drive is the primary source of storage for data and instructions on a computer.Computers are at the forefront of advancement in modern society. Without devices such as computers and automated equipment, many modern processes would not be able to take place. Similarly, many individuals would be at a disadvantage for not utilizing these important machines to conduct regular tasks as part of their job, or for leisure. Having a concrete understanding of computer hardware is equally as important as knowing how to operate these impactful devices.

Computer hardware is an umbrella term that refers to the physical components of a computer. Hardware includes tangible items which can be physically touched or seen, and it is required for a computer to function. Computer hardware can be classified as internal or external, which relates to the placement of the physical part in or around the device. Generally, internal hardware is required for the computer to run, while external hardware enhances the use or functionality. Examples of internal computer hardware may include a video card, memory, or a core processing unit (CPU), while external computer hardware examples include a keyboard or a computer case.

Computer hardware refers to the physical components of the device that can be touched or seen. A computer case holds all of the hardware required for a computer to function.

hardware meaning in computer
In comparison, computer software cannot be touched or seen. Software is a set of written and machine-readable instructions needed for a computer to perform specific operations, such as the functions performed by an operating system (like Windows or Mac) or a graphics driver. Software runs in conjunction with hardware to compliment the workings of a computer system. Without either of these components, a computer would be unable to function.

Types of Computers

Before describing the individual pieces of physical hardware found within a computer, it is important to recognize and understand the two main types of computers:

Desktop computers

Laptop computers.
Desktop computers consist of a computer case filled with many internal hardware components, as well as a separate monitor to display graphics. The hardware found within a computer case allows the machine to function, while the monitor allows a user to see the process a computer is performing externally. Desktop computers run on a main power supply that does not hold a charge, making them non-portable devices. They also usually feature a keyboard and a mouse attached through a USB cable to increase functionality. Desktop computers are designed to function in one location, and are usually placed on a desk. Desktop computers may also be referred to as personal computers (PCs).
