As a child, Joseph attended Walker Elementary School in Walker,
Louisiana, from 1940-1948, according to his security clearance paper-
work. There was no junior high or middle school, so students in Walker
attended first through eighth grade at Walker Elementary School and
ninth through twelfth grade attended Walker High School, which Joseph
did from 1948-1952.

At some point in his youth, his mother taught him
how to play guitar, and later in his youth learned to play mandolin
and banjo; Joseph played all three throughout life.

When Joseph was a teenager, he became interested in working on
cars, a passion that would last his entire life. It was this passion
that also allowed him to befriend
Herman Ellis Crotwell Jr. (1934-
2018) in high school, who was equally interested in cars.

He also be-
gan attending church at Walker Baptist Church with Herman and his fam-
ily.

After graduating high school, Joseph spent a few months trying
to find a job, but employers were hesitant to hire men of enlistment
age because they could be drafted due to the Korean War.

As a precau-
tion, Joseph decided to enlist and joined the Air Force, which he
served in until 1957.

After he returned home from the Air Force, he
