Announcements within the family, such as obituaries and marriage an- nouncements always included her, and Esther would mention her in con- versations. 219 At some point after 1940, Stanley, who was a farmer, bought sev- eral acres of land in Columbia Furnace near a Methodist church, and the family moved from Madison to Columbia Furnace. 220 It is unclear what prompted the move, though Stanley had been born in the neighbor- ing town of Edinburg. 221 The farm in Columbia Furnace would eventually have a silo, large red barn, butcher house, several fields for cattle grazing and crop growing, sheds and a chicken coop.
