Russell has been described as a “cowboy kind-of-guy” by fam-
ily, and as documented by census records was a farmer.

Russell and his wife Estella had six children who survived to 
adulthood, including Sadie Estella Graham (1916-2007). Estella died 
young, and Russell reportedly felt ‘lost’ afterwards, and had his 
youngest daughter, Sadie, stay with family members.

Russell did not 
remarry following his wife’s death.

Russell died at the age of 83 on 
December 4, 1967, and was buried alongside Estella in Friendship 
United Methodist Church Cemetery in Walker, Louisiana.
