Teaching Reading Principles


In teaching English for foreign language as in our country is important for teacher can manage their classroom, beside that teacher should know the principles of reading, it is talking about some fundamental in reading activity, according to Harmer (2007 :101) explains some principles in reading are following:

          1. Principle 1 : encourage students to read as often and as much as possible.

For students, reading is better as often and as much as possible. As teacher, we should encourage them to read extensively as well as possible, if not more then intensively, it better to discuss it the important of reading in group while they are in reading activity. So they will realize that with reading they get many advantages.

          1. Principle 2 : students need to be engaget with what they are reading.

As teacher, we should help them get much pleasure from it as possible when they reading extensively, they should be involved in joyfull reading so it not only before and after lesson but during the lesson too. We will do our best to ensure they are engaged with the topic of reading text and the activities they are asked to do while dealing with it.

          1. Principle 3 : encourage the students to respond to the content of a text (and explore their feelings about it), no just concentrate on its construction.

It important to students learning about the construction of the text but in this activity it learns students get the meaning ( the message
of the text), it is especially important that they should be allowed to show their feeling about the topic.

          1. Principle 4 : Prediction is a major factor in reading.

When teach about a new topic it better to ask students to prediction what will they learn before they start reading, as cover giving clue about what is in the book.

          1. Principle 5 : match the tasks to the topic when using intensive reading text.

A teacher, we need choose good reading task, it absolutely based on the students level, the topic of the text. Harmer explain that the most useful and interesting text can undermined by boring and inappropiate tasks.

          1. Principle 6 : good teachers exploit reading texts to the full.

Good teacher integrate the reading text into interesting lesson sequences, using the topic for discussion and further tasks, using the language for study and using a range of activities to bring the text to life
The result in the following explanation above, to increase students‟ habit of reading can with unrealize activity actually it make students enjoy in reading and the help from teacher is needed during the activity of reading to make sure that students get the message of text has they read absolutely it about topic, information etc. And to make students interest invite students predic what they going to read, beside that teacher should attention in task after the activity.
