Finish Give Yourself the Gift of Done

There’s Still Time
Perfectionism will tell you that you’ve spent so long in a hiding place that
there’s no more time. You’ve missed some magical window. Your opportunity is
gone. The chance has passed. Ridiculous.
In the 1970s, two writers put together a script for a movie. They pitched it as
hard as they could, but no one wanted to make it. Ultimately, it sat on the shelf

hard as they could, but no one wanted to make it. Ultimately, it sat on the shelf
of some studio executive for nineteen years. Every few years, they’d dust it off
and think, “Nah, it’s not good.”
Eventually, an agent named Tony Krantz got ahold of it. He fought for it. He
pushed it up the ladder. The movie script became a TV show that eventually
became the most successful drama in the history of television.
The show was called ER. The writers who created it almost two decades
before it aired were Michael Crichton of Jurassic Park fame and Steven
Spielberg of everything.
Nineteen years is an awful long time to sit on a shelf.
I don’t know how long you’ve been hiding from your goal. Maybe it’s
nineteen days or nineteen years, the exact time doesn’t really matter; the result is
still the same.
Are you overfocusing on your kids because you’re afraid to admit your goals
matter, too?
Are you manicuring your in-box and hiding instead of working on your
business plan?
Maybe you’ve beaten your hiding places but you’ve complicated your goal.
Are you tempted to learn two languages right now?
Do you ever march to the false beat of a noble obstacle?
Worrying about your book’s marketing plan when you haven’t even finished
writing the book is a noble obstacle.
Weighing grams of carbohydrates when you haven’t exercised a single
minute all month is a noble obstacle.
Researching the twenty-fifth competitor in your industry when you haven’t
finished the LLC paperwork for your own business is a noble obstacle.
Goals are simple but they are not easy. You must leave your hiding places.
You have to abandon your noble obstacles. And in perhaps the strangest way to
end a chapter, you better get ready to kill some birds.
Actions:
1. Ask the three questions to identify your hiding places.
2. Share your hiding places with a friend. Give them the permission and
power to tell you when they see you hiding.
3. Start creating a list of “next goals” so that you have a home for any new
ideas that come up.

4. Find a hose, like Jason, our furniture builder. (Try to simplify your goal
in one way.)
5. Admit and eliminate any side goals that you’ve taken on.
6. Ask a close friend what he or she thinks your noble obstacles are.
