  1. PREFER- афзал курмок

prefer – эганинг умумий холда ёки умуман олганда бирор нарсани ёки бирор нарса килишликни афзал куришини ифодалайди:

S + prefer + doing something 1 to doing something 2

S + prefer + to do sth1 rather than(do) sth2

general idea

Tom prefers reading books to talking on the phone.

He prefers wine to beer.

I prefer soccer to basketball

Halilullo prefers to play football rather than watch it on TV.
would prefer – эганинг муаян бир холатда ёки вазиятда бирор нарса ёки бирор иш харакат килишни афзал куришлигини ифодалайди:

specific idea

- What shall we drink? They serve coffee and tea.

- I would prefer to drink tea rather than coffee.

I’d prefer not to discuss this issue.

I’d prefer you not to smoke, please.

She’d prefer to pay cash rather than transfer the money.

I’d prefer him not to paint it.

He’d prefer to tell Tom.

-Would you like something to drink? Wine or Beer?

-I’d rather drink wine than beer.


-We’d like to play basketball. Will you join us?

-No, I’d rather play football with the ICC guys than basketball.

Would you like to start today or would you rather wait / would you prefer to wait till tomorrow? – I’d rather go today than wait till tomorrow. I’d rather not wait. (= I’d prefer to start to day. I’d prefer not to wait.)

Ravshan says he’d rather go to prison than pay the fine. But his parents would rather pay his fine than let him go to prison.

We’d rather die than surrender.

I’d rather fly than go by sea. (I’d prefer to fly.)

S + would rather + have + V (Perfect)

S + would prefer + to have + V (Perfect)


утган замонда афзал курилган, лекин амалга ошмаган иш харакат
We went by sea but I’d rather have gone by air. / I’d prefer to have gone by air. (I wanted but I didn’t get my wish.)

She’d rather have had (= She’d prefer to have had) her baby at home than in hospital. (She wanted to have her baby at home but she didn’t get her wish.)

I’d rather have done (= I’d prefer to have done) my homework than today. (Уй вазифани кеча бажарганим афзалрок эди.)


S + would rather(that) + somebody + did / didn’t


Present & Future contrary to fact: эга бошка бир киши бирор иш харакат килишини афзал куради ва иш харакатнинг содир булиш эхтимоллиги жуда кам

- Shall I give you a cheque?

- I’d rather you paid cash.

- Would you like him to paint it? - No, I’d rather he didn’t (paint it).

Ann wants to tell Tom, but I’d rather she didn’t (tell him).

Do you want Bahtiyor to repair the car for you? – I’d rather he rang / I’d prefer him to ring the repairman. I’d rather he didn’t try to repair it himself.

The guys want to camp in near my house in the country but I’d rather they didn’t. I’d rather they camped by the river.

He usually has lunch at a restaurant, but his wife would rather he came home for lunch. She’d rather he didn’t spend so much money.

to visit him at the end of this week.)

My brother would rather that Akmal had taken IELTS than TOEFL. (But he didn’t take IELTS.)

The examiner would rather that the students had used pencils than pens. (But most students used pens).
