Theodore Dreiser died of heart failure on December 28, 1945 in Los Angeles, California.
The creative heritage is preserved in the novels and short story collections of the writer. In 1931 and 1951 in the United States, Joseph von Sternberg and George Stevens were filmed based on the director's novel An American Tragedy. The writer's works "Jenny Gerhardt" (1933) and "Sister Carrie" (1952) were also filmed.

Dreiser decided to become a reporter. In 1892-1894, he worked as a reporter for newspapers in Pittsburgh, Toledo, Chicago, and St. Louis. In 1894, he moved to New York. His younger brother, Paul Dresser, founded the monthly music magazine, and Dreiser took over as editor. In 1897, he leaves the magazine. He wrote for Metropolitan, Harpers, Cosmopolitan.
One of Dreiser's first published literary works was the essay "New York's Art Quarter: A Literary and Artistic Refuge in Brockville" (Metropolitan Magazine, November 1897). Before his first novel appeared in 1900, Dreiser published 42 articles and a number of poems. Dreiser noted in an interview for Who's Who in America (1899) that he had written two books12:
In 1938, Dreiser was invited to an anti-war conference in Paris, opened in connection with the bombing of Spanish cities. In the summer, he visited Barcelona and met with the country's president and prime minister. On his return, he visited England, where he hoped to meet with members of the British government. In the USA, he managed to have a short meeting with Roosevelt. After that, he did not attempt to organize a committee to supply food to Spain. As a result, several cargo ships with flour were sent to Spain in the direction of Roosevelt.13
