She said that the chemicals would get into our water and poison us, and kill the fish and other creatures living in the creek. So, pesticides were strictly banned on our land. Consequently, my cousins and I spent many hours carrying out Granny`s favourite method of destroying insects. During growing season, we searched the rows of beans and potatoes to find and crush beetle eggs and throw the adult insects into jars of warm soapy water to drown.

Florence Nightingale established the foundations of modern nursing with her treatment of the sick and injured during the Crimean War of 1853-1856. Once back in London after the war, she founded the Nightingale School and Home for Nurses using money donated in gratitude for her services. The school marked the beginning of professional education in the nursing filed. Her book Notes on Nursing became the first definitive text-book for the field. Nightingale`s contributions to the evolution of nursing as a profession were invaluable. Before her reforms, nurses didn`t get any formal education. Though her efforts the stature of nursing was raised to that of a medical profession with high standards of education and important responsibilities. She received many honours from foreign governments, and in 1907 she became the first woman to receive the Order of Merit. She died in London on August 13, 1910.
