Australian English Pronunciation.
Australian English is one of the literary national types used since the end of the eighteenth century. Australian English is similar to British English, eg. Truck is used instead of lorry but some spellings of British and American English leads to a certain amount of spelling confusion eg. behavior as opposed to behavior.
Uniquely, Australian terms: Outback- remote regional areas. Walkabout- a long journey of certain distance. Bush- native forested areas. Australian English has a unique set of diminutives formed by adding –o or –ie to the ends of word:
Arvo- afternoon Servo- service station Barbie- barbecue Bikkie- biscuit
There are three types of pronunciation in Australia:
1 .Educated or Cultivated Australian English;
2. Broad Australian English;
3. General Australian English (GAu) which is regarded as a literary type.
The following simple vowels (monophthongs and diphthongized vowels) exist in GAu;

/ɔ/ » hot /hɔt/

Functions of Word Stress.
1. Constitutive. Word stress organizes the syllables of a word into a language unit having a definite accentual structure, which is a pattern of relationship among the syllables; a word does not exist without the word stress.
2. Word – identifying. Word stress enables a person to identify a succession of syllables as a definite accentual pattern of a word. Correct accentuation helps the listeners make process of communication easier, whereas misplaced word stresses prevent normal understanding.
