Old English poetry has some distinctive qualities that have largely been lost from use in later works of Western literature, despite the fact that most of contemporary Western writing is influenced by and modified from those forms. Using samples from both texts, the following identifies four of the most prevalent elements found in Old English literature. Topos Ubi-Sunt Where are the people who came before us, as expressed in the Ubi-Sunt Topos, which translates as “where are…(fill in the blank)”? The Ubi-Sunt topos emphasizes a sense of loss, particularly for extinct or former generations or cultures, by evoking a sense of the transience of life. Alliteration in Poetry When there are two or more words in a line, alliterative verse utilizes the same sound at the beginning of each word. Take the “b” sound in “Beowulf fearlessly entered combat,” for instance. Alliteration serves as the poem’s structure and is maintained throughout an alliterative verse composition like Beowulf. A characteristic of Germanic heroism known as Comitatus Litotes Litotes: A gadget in which something is purposely downplayed in a to some degree amusing design. Thomas Bulfinch called him “The Little Prince of the House of Sille”, referring to his relatively low importance in the historical arc of England.Geoffrey of Monmouth’s Twelfth-Century England References in the King’s account characterize him as a valiant warrior against Saxon invaders, but later narrators embellish this characterization to the point of making Arthur a sort of Christopher or superhero.
