Floodings in Bartangdara

  • Last week, many roads and villages have been flooded due to a sudden rise of temperatures (and thus a strong increase of melted snow coming from glaciers and snow-packs). No rain event has been recorded during this period...

Quick chronology

  • Background: Spring 2010

  • The Jezev bridge has been washed away (apparently due to avalanches, but information not confirmed)

Quick chronology

  • Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

  • Local people reported to have driven up the Bartang valley (up to Khijez village) with no water on the road.

  • No pictures available

Quick chronology

  • Thursday, August 5th, 2010

  • It was possible to drive up the valley, but with parts of the roads flooded (up to 150m long and 40-50cm deep)

Quick chronology

  • Friday, August 6th, 2010

  • Tourists have been stopped a few kilometers higher than the Jezev bridge due to flooded road

  • No pictures available

Quick chronology

  • Sunday, August 8th, 2010

  • In the Ravmeddara (valley perpendicular to the Bartangdara), a footbridge has been washed away and another one has been slightly damaged. It will probably be impossible to go up or down the Ravmeddara by the normal way until autumn.

Parts of the bridge have been seen stuck in the river up to 1-2 km downstream...

Quick chronology

  • Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

  • The road of Bartangdara is heavily damaged on several places.

  • Houses have been destroyed in Basid and Baghu villages (probably as well in other villages, but no evidence yet) and Basid seems to be unreachable (bridge collapsed)

  • At least it seems that no (few?) people have been killed, as some of them have been moved to Rushan center just before the floodings. But the re-building might take a very long time without strong foreign aid... Most of the valley will probably be unreachable (except by foot) for several months...
