. Some linguists, most notably Geoffrey Pullum, have written of a supposed “Eskimo snow hoax,”
claiming that there are actually not as many words for snow in Eskimo languages as what some might
think. The numbers for Eskimo snow terms have indeed been exaggerated by some, as Pullum rightly
notes. However, as K. David Harrison points out, “All documented languages show extreme lexical
proliferation and specialization for domains that are culturally important.” He points out, “Yupik elders
list, define, and illustrate ninety-nine specific Yupik words for types of sea ice formations. This prolific
lexicon for ice is in no way equivalent to the English set of terms for snow/ice (e.g., sleet, ice pack,
etc.), but is vastly more complex, more ancient, more taxonomically structured, more information
rich, and more connected to the environment. Lexical richness is at the heart of what makes the work
of translators truly difficult, and so vital.”
