FREELANCE

The world of new opportunities

THEORETICAL PART OF THE LESSON

Definition

Working on a contract basis for a variety of companies, as opposed to working as an employee for a single company. Freelancers are often considered to be self-employed, and have the freedom to pick and choose their projects and companies they would like to be associated with.

Terms

freelancer or freelance worker is a term commonly used for a person who is self-employed and is not necessarily committed to a particular employer long-term. Freelance workers are sometimes represented by a company or a temporary agency that resells freelance labor to clients; others work independently or use professional associations or websites to get work.

Definition

A common profession for freelancing is writing; a writer then has the ability to submit their work to many different places, without being tied to any one company in particular.

Implementation

Fields, professions and industries where freelancing is predominant include:

music, journalism, publishing, screen writing, filmmaking, acting, photojour-nalism, cosmetics, fragrances, editing, photography, event planning, event manage-ment, copy editing, proof-reading, author editing, indexing, copywriting, writing, computer program-ming, web design, graphic design, website develop-ment consulting, tour guiding, post-secondary education, video editing, video production, translating, illustrating.

and other forms of piece work which some cultural theorists consider as central to the cognitive-cultural economy.

Advantages

Freelancing is so flexible, you can set your own hours, working full or part-time on the projects of your choice. While clients can offer specifications to the work, a freelancer works similar to an independent contractor, in which he's free to control how the work is completed.

Advantages of Freelancing

There are several perks to working as a freelancer, including:

  • Fast to get started. As long as you already know the skill you plan to offer, getting started is simply a matter of finding your first client.

Advantages of Freelancing

  • Easy to start. You can start right now, acting as a sole proprietor and using your network find a client. While you'll want to build a LinkedIn profile and/or a website, you can network within your current career and friend networks to find your first client.

Advantages of Freelancing

  • Affordable. Odds are if you have the ability to provide the service, you also have whatever equipment or software you need to deliver. Eventually you'll want to invest in business building tools, such as a website, but using LinkedIn (which is free) is a great online resume that can help you promote your service.

Advantages of Freelancing

  • The need for freelancers is large. While the marketplace of freelancers is competitive, the need for quality, reliable freelancers is growing. Many businesses don't have employees and instead have a team of freelancers.

Advantages of Freelancing

  • Choose your own schedule. Work when and where you want.
  • Pick and choose clients. While in the beginning you may take any client that will hire you, as you grow, you can choose not to take on difficult clients. You can even fire them.

Advantages of Freelancing

  • Do the work the way you see fit. While you need to deliver what the client asks, how the work is done is up to you.

Disadvantages of Freelancing

  • Can take time to build clientele. Getting enough clients to make freelancing something that supports you and your family can take awhile.
  • Work can be irregular. Many freelancers experience an ebb and flow in their work. You need to plan for lean times, and be ready to work hard to deliver work on-time when work is plentiful.

Disadvantages of Freelancing

  • Managing multiple clients and projects can be a challenge. While some people like the variety of working on several projects at a time, others may find it difficult to keep track of deadlines and pace themselves to deliver quality work on time.
  • Pay may be low to start out. Especially in today's digital economy, many people expect to pay less for work from a new freelancer.

Independent Learning

Read the text and write a short summary to the text.

Freelance writing is writing that you get paid for without being hired full time. Want to try your hand at it? The followings will explain

freelance writing and go through common uses and examples.

Freelance writing is, more or less, professional writing done by freelancers. To be freelance is to work on different jobs or for short

periods of time, without being a permanent employee. The word 'freelance' itself comes from the Middle Ages, to describe the knights who

would defend whichever king paid them, rather than being loyal to just one king. These knights were referred to as 'free lanced'.

If you are a freelance writer, you do not belong to one publication or organization, and instead submit your writing to whomever pays you

for it. Freelance writing can be both creative and technical, but either way it is a short-term commitment. For creative writing pieces, a

freelance writer usually writes first, and then seeks a publication to house it. For technical or specialized projects, a freelance writer

will generally be sought out first.

Types of Freelance Writing

Technically, any writing paid for by a person or company that doesn't employ you full time makes the writing freelance. The most popular

freelance writing can be found in publications online or in print, in areas like business, marketing and journalism. They can also be found

in businesses and organizations that have single projects to complete, such as grants and proposals.

There are many types of freelance writing gigs:

Newspaper article

Grant writing for a nonprofit organization

Program proposal

Website blog

Training manual

Book review

Interview published in a magazine

Translation of a story written in a foreign language

Why Hire a Freelance Writer?

Companies might contract out writing assignments for several reasons. Some businesses do not have in-house employees who

specialize in writing, or know a topic or field well enough to write about it. Hiring a freelance writer means getting the work done correctly,

accurately, and professionally without putting pressure on an unqualified employee. For publications, keeping their doors open to

freelance writing is important. This way, they have access to many different writing styles, subject matters, and voices.

If you are a freelance writer looking for a home for your story, look into publications such as newspapers, journals, and magazines to

see if your writing style is suited first. If you want to get into freelance writing, there are online groups you can join such as Elance.com

and WritersAcess.com. Groups like these, once you are allowed to join, give you access to businesses seeking freelance writing jobs.

Thank you!
